weekend for its annual Fourth of July
race at Daytona in Saturday night's
Pepsi 400.

The July race at the beach also
marks the midpoint of the season, and a
chance for NASCAR to look back and look
ahead.

Yesterday, chairman Brian France
did just that, saying after this
season, some changes will be made to
the "Chase for the Championship."

Like many a fulltime athlete and world
champion, Takeru Kobayashi has a
ferocious appetite for pumping iron .
He obsesses over every pound...

NAT SOT grunting

TRACK

And has an insatiable focus on eating
his rival's lunch. That's why
Kobayashi's a superstar, in...

NAT SOT cheers

TRACK ... the bizarre world of
competitive eating. He's the five-time
hotdog-eating champ.

SOT (Takeru Kobayashi/"competitive

eater" champion) in Japanese: "I PROVED
YOU COULD EAT 50 HOTDOGS IN 12 MINUTES.
IT'S LIKE RUNNING 100 METERS IN NINE
SECONDS."

TRACK It's been called degraded,
disgusting and a sign of societal
decay. Kobayashi calls it a sport...

SOT (Takeru Kobayashi) in Japanese: "IT

IS BAD FOR MY BODY," HE ADMITS. "BUT
ANYTHING OUTSIDE THE NORMAL LIMITS OF
HUMAN ABILITY, STRAINS YOUR BODY."

TRACK Worshipped by pig-out purists
from Chattanooga to Coney Island as
"The Tsunami," Kobayashi is to gluttony
what Lance Armstrong is to cycling. The
mild-mannered 28-year-old can out-gorge
Americans three times his size.

SOT (Kobayashi's friend) in Japanese:

"I DIDN'T THINK HE HAD A CHANCE AGAINST
ALL THOSE BIG GUYS. I WAS AMAZED WHEN
HE WON. WE'RE PROUD OF HIM."

BRIDGE STANDUP (Lucy Craft/CBS News,
Nagoya) KOBAYASHI HAILS FROM THE
HEARTLAND OF JAPAN, NAGOYA. HE TRAINS
ON A DIET OF FRIED RICE, NOODLES, AND
TOFU, MAKING A LEAN, MEAN EATING
MACHINE, THAT GIVES HIS RIVALS IN CONEY
ISLAND HEARTBURN.

TRACK His secret - strategic low-cal
eat-a-thons, with large helpings of
exercise to maintain those washboard
abs.

SOT (Takeru Kobayashi) "IF YOUR

INTESTINES GET FATTY, YOUR STOMACH
CAN'T PACK AS MUCH. SO I CONTROL MY
WEIGHT."

TRACK Overeating for a living may seem
in bad taste. But for the Tsunami, the
fastest way to greatness - is through
his stomach. Lucy Craft, CBS News,
Nagoya, Japan.
