AFTER A MEETING LATE MONDAY, MANAGERS
DECIDED TO PRESS AHEAD WITH THE

JULY 4TH SHUTTLE LAUNCH.

ENGINEERS CONCLUDED A 5-INCH CRACK IN
THE FOAM OF THE EXTERNAL FUEL TANK

POSED NO THREAT TO SHUTTLE DISCOVERY.

(SOT: Bill Gerstenmaier/Associate

Administrator for Space Operations )

" ... and the structure is in good
shape."

CONCERNS WERE RAISED AFTER ENGINEERS
SPOTTED THE CRACK ON A BRACKET THAT

HOLDS A FUEL LINE AGAINST THE TANK --
AND THIS --

A TRIANGULAR PIECE OF FOAM THAT HAD

BROKEN OFF. IT MEASURES ABOUT TWO

INCHES BY THREE INCHES AND WEIGHS AS
MUCH AS A PENNY.

NASA OFFICIALS SAY IT WAS CAUSED BY ICE
BUILD UP FROM CONDENSATION AND

CHANGES IN TANK SIZE AND TEMPERATURE
DURING DE-FEULING.

THEY SAY IF FURTHER ICE DEVELOPS,
THERE'S ENOUGH FOAM THAT IT SHOULDN'T

BE A PROBLEM.

NASA SPENT ALL DAY CONSIDERING WHETHER
TO GO AHEAD WITH THE HOLIDAY

LAUNCH, PUSH IT BACK TO WEDNESDAY AFTER
AN EXTENSIVE EXAMINATION OF THE

FOAM INSULATION, OR TRY TO REPAIR THE
CRACK -- WHICH COULD HAVE TAKEN SEVERAL
DAYS.

WEIGHTY ISSUES FOR AN AGENCY FACED WITH
A 2010 PROGRAM DEADLINE -- AND A

TIGHT LAUNCH WINDOW.

BUT FOAM CRACKING AND FALLING OFF HAS
BEEN A CONCERN SINCE IT CAME TO

THE FOREFRONT BACK IN 2003.

That s when foam struck the Shuttle
Columbia during liftoff and

eventually caused it to disintegrate as
re-entered the Earth s

Atmosphere.

A chunk of foam just missed Discovery

during takeoff Last August, and

that s why it took almost a year to get
the program going again.

And even this launch was questioned by
two top NASA flight engineers who

cautioned the issue was yet to be
resolved..

SO NOW IT'S ONCE AGAIN UP TO WEATHER
... TO DETERMINE IF THERE WILL BE A

LIFTOFF THIS FOURTH OF JULY.

Osborne played 4 seasons for the
Titans batting 3-thirty-three this
season with an on-base percentage of
472.

More importantly, Osborne was the
man behind the plate who ran the
pitching staff and made many of the
calls to the infield for coach Jason
Taylor, which is a valuable asset to
any program.

ESPN That was the case today for Pat
Hurst and Annika Sorenstam who were
tied at Even par after 72 Holes.

They didn't stay tied for very
long. On the very first Hole Hurst
would miss her Putt for Par and drop to
1 over.

Sorenstam who hit it close on
number 1 had a chance to make Birdie
and she would not misse and just like
that she was up 2 strokes after 1 hole.

Annika wouldn't let Hurst back in
the Match from then on out as she had 3
birdies total on her day off-set by
just 2 Bogeys for a 1 under par round.

Hurst never made a run partly
because she didn't make a Birdie until
the 18th hole and she made it from
deep. Hurst finished her round at 3
over par and she would have to settle
for the Runner-Up Spot.

All Annika had to do was tap in
for par and she wins her 3rd U.S. Open
Title and first since 1996. Sorenstam
has now won 15 of her 20 Playoffs.
