(END SOT) (LOCATOR: KENNEDY SPACE CENTER)

SUPER: VIDEO FROM NASA TV

It is the four-letter word that NASA
engineers know all too

wellFOAMand it is once again an issue
that could delay the launch of

the Space Shuttle Discovery.

The space agency found a five-inch long
crack in the insulation foam on

the orbiters external fuel tank..that
caused a tiny piece to fall off.

(SOT )John Shannon, chairman, Mission

Management Team,

"IT LOOKED LIKE A SMALL PIECE OF BREAD
CRUST"

Its on a bracket--high up--that
connects a liquid oxygen feed line to

Discoverys 15 story external fuel
tank.

Engineers believe the recent rains may
be to blamecausing condensation

to form on the line.

(SOT )John Shannon, chairman, Mission

Management Team,

"And it froze and we got some ice build
up in that articulating joint

and when the tank was emptied and it
started to warm up it started to

expand and we think some of the ice
stayed in that joint and it crushed

a little bit of that foam."

(STANDUP: DREW LEVINSON/KENNEDY SPACE
CENTER)

THE ISSUE OF FOAM CRACKING AND FALLING
OFF HAS ALWAYS BEEN A CONCERN

FOR NASA AND IT REALLY CAME TO THE
FOREFRONT BACK IN 2003

Thats when foam struck the Shuttle
Columbia during liftoff and

eventually caused it to disintegrate as
re-entered the Earths

Atmosphere.

A chunk of foam just missed Discovery
during takeoff Last August, and

thats why it took almost a year to get
the program going again.

And even this launch was questioned by
two top NASA flight engineers who

cautioned the issue was yet to be
resolved..

So now the question is..can they repair
the problem in time for a fourth

of July liftoffthe answer isNASA
doesnt know.

Center.>>

Shoppers were astonished as they
watched a bull run through the streets
of China, stopping traffic. Apparently
the bull got scared and forced its way
out of a slaughterhouse.

It hurt one person by ramming him in
the ribs but then crews were able to
tranquilize the bull. But even then, it
was hard to stop, running another 500
yards before finally laying down.
