Today, authorities in Rockbridge
County recovered the body of 21- year-
old Aaron Cooper from the James River,
a short distance from where he
disappeared.

success since Friday, when Cooper went
into the water while rafting with a
friend.

The water level has dropped
several feet since then, and this
morning, officers from the Virginia

spotted his body at Balcony Falls.

Henry County early this morning.

shot Robert Preston once in the chest
during an argument on Southland Drive,
where they lived together.

Foley told deputies that she had
been assaulted by Preston and that the
shooting was in self-defense.

after a water main break at 2nd and
Ingles Streets last night made water
pressure extremely low.

of a different kind that kicked off the
city's celebration of Independence Day.

Hot air balloons have become a
July fourth tradition in the city. The
B- B & T Balloon Rally celebrated its
tenth anniversary this year.

Fog delayed the launch this
morning, but the sun eventually broke
through. Close to a dozen hot air
balloons lifted off from the parade
ground at Virginia Military Institute,

and floated away over the Rockbridge
County countryside.

another popular pasttime in downtown
Lexington.... the annual children's
Bicycle Parade.

Uncle Sam lead the way on his
unicycle, and a large crowd of young
people and their parents turned out to
decorate their bikes and parade down
Main Street.

Development Association organized the
event,.promising lemonade and
watermelon at the end of the route.

amendment banning flag burning

NO SUPER 64 per cent support such an amendment,
double the number that oppose it. The
amendment fell one vote short of
passage last week in th U.S. Senate.

Our poll also shows overwhelming
support - 83 per cent - for a bill to
prevent condo and homeowners
associations from banning display of
Old Glory.

The House approved the measure last

semi-finals.

The first of two final four
showdown was held this afternoon as the
host country Germany took on Italy.

to score late in the game but both
shots - one a finesse flip and another
a missile bounced off the metal pipe
that makes up the goal cage.

The game went to the overtime
phase and was scoreless after the first
15 minutes, but then Italy scored twice
in less than 2 minutes. Fabio Grosso
and *CG final Italy Alessandro Del Piero buried goals in 2 the second overtime to ice the win for Germany Italy.

Ferrum College hit a major milestone
this afternoon as the Mets beat the
Pirates.

SNY Billy Wagner picked up his 300th
career save this afternoon as the Mets
rallied and they held on to down the
Pirates 7-to-6.

With a one run lead in the ninth
- Wagner would throw some serious heat
at Jason Bay and strike him out.

Later in the 9th - Wagner would
get a ground ball for the easy force at
second to end the game. Wagner becomes
the 20th pitcher in history and just

the third lefthander all-time to reach
300 saves. Ironically, the other two
lefthanders were former Mets John
Franco, and Randy Myers.
