(END SOT) July--leave the big blast to NASA.

3-2-1 WE HAVE LIFTOFF

Finally after two scrubs because of bad
weather--and a cracked piece of

foam the Space Shuttle Discovery made a
star spangled spectacular launch

Tuesday afternoon.

It will take NASA some time to make
sure the problems theyve suffered in
the past.. foam hitting vital parts of
the shuttle..

resurface at launch..they must check
pictures taken at liftoff to see what
foam if any fell off.but so far so
good.

DREW LEVINSON/KENNEDY SPACE CENTER

"Now that Discovery is back in space -
the seven astronauts can focus

their attention on the mission
itself....and it certainly an
aggressive

mission."

With more than five thousand pounds of
supplies on board, the shuttle is

the only spacecraft capable of
transporting the needed components to

complete the billion-dollar
International Space Station. Astronaut

Jim

Reilly knows the exhilaration of
linking up the Shuttle to the Station

while traveling at 17-thousand miles an
hour.

Jim Reilly/Astronaut: "That's kind of
a Yahoo moment, everybody is laughing
and high filing and everything worked
out beautifully.

Also on board, they've got what you
could call a space

hitchhiker...European space Agency
astronaut Thomas Reiter will be joining
the two others already living on the
space station.

During two spacewalks, the astronauts
will inspect the Shuttle's heat shields
and continue building the Space
Station. For NASA putting the space
shuttle back in orbit after being
grounded for nearly a year is a huge
accomplishment and big step forward for

Takeru kobiyashi (crowd applause)

The now infamous champion back for
the 6 th straight year

SOT-MOS

"I think he calls himself a bodybuilder
with a competitive eating body"

But on this independence day, an
American challenger, joey chestnut,
emerged

ready to duke it out with the dogs.

NATS-

And after some pre-game warm-up.

3,2,1 go (start eating)

It was time to dig in!

STANDUP- Tracie Strahan/Reporting
/CONEY ISLAND

Here is the tale of the tape.. the
champ in this contest has consumed 53
and

a half hot dogs. That's about 1 every
13 seconds. No other contestant has
been

able to cut the mustard

And this year would be no different..
it did come down to the wire.

NATS-

But kobiyashi was able to not only
pull off a win.. but set a red hot
record

eating 53 and 3 quarters franks!

NATS-

(emcee)what are you gonna have for

lunch? (smiles picks up a hot dog and
bites

it) ahhh

Showing even the average joe can
become a "top dog".
