You're looking at a live picture of
NASA Video Space Shuttle Discovery, as it sits on
the launch pad at Cape Canaveral.
Today will bring the first- ever
July Fourth lift-off of the space
shuttle.
Engineers say the crack found in
the foam surrounding the shuttle's fuel
tank won't threaten the launch.
And as Drew Levinson tells us, it
looks like Mother Nature won't pose a
threat, either.

Discoverys Seven astronauts are hoping
the ....Fourth.... is the charmas
in ....Fourth.... of July.
Everything looks good for the Shuttle
as it sits ready for liftoff on
launch pad 39-B.
Todays forecast is the best yet as the
Space Agency tries for a third
time to launch.
The first two this past weekend were
scrubbed because of bad weather.
Yesterday engineers dealt with
anotheryet--familiar problema piece
of
foam fell off.but after close
inspection of the external fuel tank
NASA
deemed the Shuttle ready for launch.
SUPER: FROM NASA TV

THE FOAM ITSELF THAT IS LEFT IN PLACE
HAS THE STRENGTH, HAS THE ABILITY
TO DO WHAT IT IS DESIGNED TO DO SO
THERE IS NO NEED TO GO REPAIR
(FILE OF COLUMBIA)
It was a piece of foam insulation that
was blamed for the Columbia
disaster in 2003. The foam broke off
the tank on liftoff, critically
damaging the spaceplane's wing.
(FILE OF DISCOVERY)
And foam fell off Discovery last summer
as it lifted off.

IF DISCOVERY DOES LIFT OFF TODAY IT
WILL BE A FIRST FOR THE SPACE AGENCY.
IT WILL BE BOTH HISTORIC AND
SYMBOLICNEVER BEFORE HAS NASA LAUNCHED
MAN
OR WOMAN INTO SPACE ON THE NATIONS
BIRTHDAY.
The 12 or possibly 13-day mission will
be a busy one for the astronauts.
Theyll bring tons of supplies and
equipment to the international space
station and continue building the giant
structure in the sky.
Theyll also deliver European Space
Agency Astronaut Thomas Reiterhell
join the two others already living on

For him and the other sixthey cant
wait to get into spaceit will be a
blastespecially on the Fourth of July.

Yesterday Nathan's hot dog eating contest in
Coney Island has become a Fourth of
July tradition.
Like any tough physical challenge,
contestants had to weigh in yesterday
ahead of today's culinary competition.
This year's competitors include five-
time hot dog eating champion Takeru
Kobayashi.
The Japanese champion eater holds
the world record-- 53-and-a-half hot
dogs in 12 minutes.
American eaters hope they can bring
the mustard yellow championship belt
back to the U-S-A.
