LOCATOR: Chechnya, Russia

HE WAS PUBLIC ENEMY NUMBER ONE IN
RUSSIA...THE NATION'S TOP TERRORIST.

BUT THE RUSSIANS SAY CHECHEN WARLORD
SHAMIL BASAYEV WAS KILLED EARLY

MONDAY DURING A RAID BY SPECIAL FORCES.

"CONGRATULATIONS," SAID RUSSIAN
PRESIDENT VLADIMIR PUTIN. "THIS IS
GOOD

RETRIBUTION FOR ALL THE TERRORIST ACTS
STAGED BY THE MILITANTS."

BASAYEV JOINED THE FIGHT FOR CHECHEN
INDEPENDENCE IN THE EARLY 1990S.

BUT HIS TACTICS TURNED MORE AND MORE
RADICAL. HE WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR

NUMEROUS TERRORIST ACTS...

Super: Budennovsk, 1995

LIKE THE HOSTAGE TAKING AT A HOSPITAL
IN BUDENNOVSK, WHERE BASAYEV LED

THE RAID HIMSELF. ABOUT 100 OF THE
THOUSAND HOSTAGES DIED.

Super: Moscow, 2002

BASAYEV ALSO PLANNED THE SIEGE OF A
MOSCOW THEATER, WHERE ACTORS,

MUSICIANS AND THE WHOLE AUDIENCE WERE
TAKEN HOSTAGE. A HUNDRED AND

THIRTY PEOPLE DIED.

Super: Beslan, 2004

BASAYEV WAS ALSO BEHIND WHAT MAY BE THE
CRUELEST TERRORIST ACT

EVER--BECAUSE IT TARGETED
CHILDREN...THE TAKING OF A SCHOOL IN
THE TOWN

OF BESLAN. 331 PEOPLE PERISHED
THERE--MORE THAN HALF OF THEM CHILDREN.

BETH KNOBEL ON-CAM:

THE TIMING OF BASAYEV'S DEATH COULDN'T
BE BETTER FOR PUTIN, WHOLL BE

HOSTING THE G8 SUMMIT NEXT WEEKEND NOW
HE CAN SHOW THE LEADERS OF THE

WORLD'S TOP NATIONS THAT RUSSIAS WAR
ON TERROR IS YIELDING RESULTS.

ANALYSTS SAY THIS IS A POLITICAL
VICTORY...BUT IT MAY NOT END TERRORISM.

SUPER: DMITRI TRENIN, CARNEGIE MOSCOW
CENTER

"I think this will be a major, symbolic
though, blow to terrorism in

Chechnya."

BECAUSE THE KREMLINS STRONG-ARM

TACTICS STILL HAVENT BROUGHT ORDER TO

CHECHNYA. AND THAT MEANS OTHERS MAY
PICK UP WHERE BASAYEV LEFT OFF.

A LEADING CAUSE OF BLINDNESS..... THAT
BLURS THE CENTER OF VISION.

BRAND NEW DRUGS HAVE BEEN ABLE TO STOP

PATRICIA'S VISION LOSS.... AND IN SOME

UNFORTUNATELY, THERE'S NO PILL THAT CAN
KEEP PEOPLE FROM GETTING MACULAR
DEGENERATION IN THE FIRST PLACE.

(STANDUP: Dr. Mallika Marshall/CBS

HELP PREVENT THE CONDITION. AND DOCTORS
ARE TELLING PATIENTS TO LOOK AT THEIR
LIFESTYLE. NEW RESEARCH REVEALS THE
SAME THINGS THAT HURT AND HELP THE
HEART HAVE A SIMILAR EFFECT ON THE
EYES.

(nats)

THE LATEST STUDY SHOWS SMOKING NEARLY
DOUBLES THE RISK OF MACULAR
DEGENERATION.

(SOT-Dr. Richard Spade/Ophthalmologist)

"another big risk factor is what kind
of things you have in your diet, people
eat a high fat diet particularly high
in cholesterol or high in animal fat
seem to have a higher risk of getting
wet macular degeneration."

AND A HEALTHY DIET CAN ACTUALLY LOWER
THE CHANCE.... ESPECIALLY IN PEOPLE WHO
ARE HOOKED ON FISH. A NEW STUDY FOUND
EATING FISH ONCE A WEEK CAN REDUCE THE
RISK OF MACULAR DEGENERATION UP TO 40
PERCENT. DOCTOR RICHARD SPADE SAYS
FISH IS FULL OF OMEGA THREE FATTY
ACIDS... GOOD FOR BLOOD VESSELS
THROUGHOUT THE BODY.

(SOT-Dr. Richard Spade/Ophthalmologist)

"sounds like we're talking about heart
disease but the same thing works for
your eye."

THESE MEASURES AREN'T A GUARANTEE
AGAINST THE CONDITION. BUT THE BOTTOM
LINE IS CLEAR. ADOPTING A HEALTHY
LIFESTYLE NOW CAN IMPROVE YOUR OUTLOOK.

GRAPHIC=BAM Good afternoon everybody and

welcome to the Monday ticker that
begins on the local basepaths at Salem

The Avalanche played an afternoon
matinee with Potomac today to wrap up
the three game set between the two. It
was the Nationals last appearance in
Salem this season.

Nationals vs. Avalanche The P-Nats made the most of it in :00 front of hundreds of kids from
Honeytree Learning Centers as they took
in the game.

The Avs Rory Shortell made his
first start of the season after going 3
and 3 out of the bullpen. Potomac
jumped on him with four runs in the
third. Brandon Powell slaps a single
to center, plating Steve Mortimer and
Ender Chavez. *CG final Potomac
8 Salem got a run back when Salem Wade Robinson hits one to short. 1 Francisco Caraballo crosses the plate
on the error, but there wasn't nearly
enough of that as the Nationals roll
Salem this afternoon 8 to 1.

Two discovery astronauts ran into
some troubles on the second of two
spacewalks... during the six and half
hour spacewalk... the anchoring device
that keeps the astronauts from floating
away nearly came loose.

They also had some troublue putting

a piece of equipment into the shuttle's
payload bay- and it was a bit tricky
installing a new part.

But eventually they were able to do
everything they set out to do.. and get
safetly back inside.

The third and final spacewalk is
set for Wednesday.
