That's when police got a call
saying two workers were trapped
underground at the site.

Police say the other workers had
already freed one of the men from the
mud and water before rescue crews got
there.

The other was pulled to safety
shortly after.

today for murder he committed nearly 20
years ago.

Thomas Lee Crowder broke into a
first-floor apartment in the Raleigh
Court area and killed an 87-year old
woman.

That was in 1987.

The case went un-solved until
late last year when a new D-N-A sample
from Crowder produced a "cold hit."

He was charged with killing
Bertha Sommardahl.

He did not contest the charge.

Today the judge decided there was
only one appropriate sentence given
these facts, and that was LIFE.

convicted of misdemeanor trespassing
and fined five-hundred dollars.

All three are appealing that

Diego, California has now scorched more
than 15-thousand acres...

out to help battle a fire that's burned
about 15 thousand acres.

About five percent of the fire is
contained.
