years ago.

Thomas Lee Crowder broke into a
first-floor apartment in the Raleigh
Court area and killed an 87-year old

woman.

That was in 1987.

The case went un-solved until
late last year when a new D-N-A sample
from Crowder produced a "cold hit."

He was charged with killing
Bertha Sommardahl.

He did not contest the charge.

Yesterday the judge decided there
was only one appropriate sentence given
these facts, and that was LIFE.

because she was on a ventalitor and
dialysis. But hospital officials say

for an armed robber.


It happened at around four
yesterday morning at the Days Inn motel
on Orange Avenue.

No arrests have been made, and no
one was injured.

sentence for a murder he committed
nearly 20 years ago.

In 19-87, Thomas Lee Crowder
broke into a Raleigh Court apartment
and killed 87-year old Bertha

A group of firefighters from
around the state gathered at the U-S
Forest Service office in Roanoke County
