(END SOT) ISRAELI TROOPS KEPT MOVING TOWARD THE

LEBANESE BORDER.. WHILE WAR PLANES
SUSPENDED THEIR STRIKES AGAINST

(NAT- )

A BOMBING IN THE SOUTHERN VILLAGE OF
QANA THAT KILLED MORE THAN 50 LEBANESE

CIVILIANS.. MANY OF THEM CHILDREN..
PROMPTED ISRAEL TO PAUSE ITS AIR
CAMPAIGN FOR 48 HOURS.

(Condoleezza Rice, Secretary of State)

RICE 1:23:34 These are important, yet
temporary measures. An urgent and more
permanent end to this violence is
something that we all want, and that we
all must work together to achieve.

SECRETARY OF STATE CONDOLEEZZA RICE
SPENT THE WEEKEND IN THE REGION TALKING
TO ISRAELI LEADERS ABOUT A SOLUTION..
BUT THE LATEST BOMBING MADE HER
UNWELCOME IN BEIRUT.

(NAT- )

LEBANESE ANGER SPILLED INTO THE STREETS
AND GREW INTO THE FIRST PUBLIC SHOW OF
SUPPORT FOR HEZBOLLAH SINCE THE
CONFLICT BEGAN.

WORLD OUTRAGE PROMPTED AN EMERGENCY
MEETING OF THE UN SECURITY COUNCIL BUT
AFTER A DAY OF TALKS MEMBERS COULD ONLY
AGREE ON A STATEMENT EXPRESSING SHOCK
AND DISTRESS OVER THE INCIDENT.

(Nouhad Mahmoud, Lebanese Ambassador to
the UN)

23:34:15 "We were looking for stronger
action, stronger language.

THAT MAY HAPPEN THIS WEEK.. SECRETARY
RICE INSISTS THERE IS A CONSENSUS ON
WHICH TO BUILD A UN RESOLUTION
CONTAINING AN URGENT CEASEFIRE AND
LASTING SETTLEMENT.

RICE 1:19:06 I am convinced that only
by achieving both will the Lebanese
people be able to control their country
and their future, and the people of
Israel finally be able to live free of
attack from terrorist groups in
Lebanon.

CLOSE: PRESIDENT BUSH HAS REPEATED

Family and friends of soldiers in the

80th division out of Salem packed the
Roanoke Regional Airport last night to
them welcome home. The soldiers'
plane was delayed nearly an hour --
only adding to the wait.

After finally arriving to the
airport, the soldiers said they'll
never forget their experience -- but
are happy and thankful to be home.
