GRAPHIC=TECH Frank Beamer opened up summer
practice at Virginia Tech this
afternoon a little shorthanded.
The Hokies were already having to
fill the void in the defensive
backfield created by the departure of
Jimmy Williams and Justin Hamilton to
the NFL.
GRAPHIC=ROLAND MINOR Now today there is word that
Roland Minor also is out for at least
six to eight weeks and most likely
longer.
The redshirt junior, who started
all but one game at cornerback last
season was involved in a car wreck
earlier this week in his hometown of
Washington, D.C.
Minor injured one of knees and
his wrist in the wreck and had surgery
this afternoon at Montgomery Regional
to repair the broken wrist.
Fortunately, he did damage his
knee bad enough to require surgery.
This afternoon as they wrapped up
their first practice of the season
around 5:30 - the Hokies had this to
say about the loss of one of their
defensive leaders.

This Afternoon The Minor injury is a major
:00 things, but Frank Beamer has dealt with
much worse as he begins his 20th season
at the helm of the Hokies.
Sean Glennon opened practice as
the number one quarterback, but that
could change by the time the season
opener rolls around as Cory Holt and
Ike Whitaker are anxious to state their
case.
The Hokies found out today that
they will start the season ranked 16th
in the brand USA Today coaches' poll
that was released this morning.
Oklahoma is the preseason number
one. West Virginia is 7th, Florida
State 10th and Miami 11th.
By the way - there are 28 days to
the Hokies' season opener.

:00 Lee Johnson's team went 9 and 2
a year ago, and 6 starters return on
each side of the ball.
66 players showed up on the
first day of workouts, and 21 of those
are seniors. That's 2 more than
Glenvar had last year.
Johnson hopes that experience
pays off in a big way in 2006.
