VO-NAT A proposal to combine a minimum-wage

increase with a break in the so-called
death tax was shot down by lawmakers.

The Senate last night failed to get
the 60 votes necessary to approve a
bill that included the tax cut for
multi million-dollar estates, with a
two-dollar-ten-cent minimum wage
increase spread over three years.

The current five-15 minimum has not
changed in a decade.

The issue could come up again in the
fall.

Guangdong province.

High winds and heavy rain lashed
an area where 400-hundred-thousand
people had earlier been evacuated.
