This was the scene around six
yesterday morning at the intersection
of Orange Avenue and 13th Street.

A 12-inch-water main broke --
closing down that section of Orange
Avenue.

The water, however, was restored
within hours.

Just last month, a water main

broke in the same area.

Water authority officials say the
breaks are most likely the result of
old piping.

The 12 inch pipe lying under
Orange Avenue dates back to the 1940s.

this weekend gathering up crayons,
pencils, and all the other necessities
required to start the school year off
right.

This was Virginia's first try at
a Tax Free weekend and parents,
preparing to send more than one child
to school say the discount helped.

The states list of tax free items
included some clothes and school
supplies, but the commonwealth gave
retailers the option of adding to that
list and absorbing the cost themselves.

It was an option that paid off
for stores like circuit city who
offered everything in the store tax
free.

Both the Wal-Mart and Circuit
City managers say they would like to
see the state expand next year's list
