In 4 years, little Kendra and Maliyah

this moment. In a marathon

separated the twin girls who had been
joined at the midsection.

experiences we've had and our family
has grown closer."
(natz)
After a tearful goodbyes with Mom and
Dad....the girls entered surgery Monday
morning where a team of six surgeons
and about two dozen support personnel
began the first known attempt to
separate conjoined twins who share one
kidney.
(Jennifer Miller bridge)
The single kidney stayed with Kendra
because its in her torso. Maliyah will
be put on dialysis until she's strong
enough to get a transplant from her
mom.
Besides the kidney, doctors faced
numerous challenges. They separated the
intestines, divided and reconstructed
two bladders, and reconstructed a
shared pelvis. Each girl was given a
leg.
There are also psychological concerns.
sot: Jake Herrin/Twins Father
(02:35:35)
"them waking up and realizing things
are a lot different now and hopefully
they'll be comforted and know that
things are all right we've tried to
prepare them as much as we can."
And while Kendra and Maliyah still must
overcome years of therapy and
surgery....their parents are at peace
with their decision to separate them.
For now on...two girls who were born
facing each other...will face the world
as individuals.

Now, it's water under the bridge and
the thing that led City Council to
re-think the code? More people are
moving into the downtown area and a lot
of the new residents have dogs.
The next step is figuring out how to
