10 KMC School Hours Pkg A 1 pkg Education 7 ani e26 --
GRAPHIC=NONE It's official, the day for kids

Education 7 animation attending Roanoke City Schools has been
extended to a six hour day.

It begins this school year.

Here's a look at the new

schedule.....
TAKE SCHOOL SCHEDULE FS GFX TAKE SCHOOL SCHEDULE FS GFX

The elementary schools will be
split into two groups according to
size.

The larger schools will be in
session from 8 to 2:50.

The smaller schools will go from
nine to 3:15, middle schools from 7:20
to 2:10 and the two high schools from
eight until two fifty.

But as Natasha Ryan explains, the
new schedule brought some debate at
last night's school board's
meeting......

OQ=Natasha Ryan, News7. << MOS.....*1623-30 the amount of
(END SOT) time spent at school does not matter as

much as what time they're there

An argument heard more than
once....teachers and parents of younger
children say elementary aged students
perform better earlier in the day, so
why not bump the starting time up
instead of extending the day.

SOT FULL SOT FULL

INQ= 16:15:13 Ciara... strong feeling out

there really going to be a baby-sitting
half hour, because these students are
going to be exhausted by the end of the
day

16:19:12 Mara...i don't think a
kindergardener-second grader can't
handle it.

RUNS= (END SOT)

OQ= But a committee put together to

recommend a scheule argued, while
earlier hours might be more desirable,
safety has to be taken into
consideration.....

SOT FULL SOT FULL

INQ= 17:01:30-39 our main concern was

safety, asking these first graders to
walk to school or bus stop in the dark,
safety was our primary consideration.

RUNS= (END SOT)

OQ= Another complaint heard often was

the lack of communication between the
administration and the community....

SOT FULL SOT FULL

INQ= 16:17:35 Mara ......three weeks before

school begins a complete injustice to
community, businesses, parents work
schedule, to wait three weeks is
completely irresponsible.

RUNS= (END SOT)

OQ= But there are still many lingering

questions...including how this will
affect sporting events and
extra-curricular activities as well as
one question from teachers....will they
be compensated for the extra time
they'll be instructing?

SOT FULL SOT FULL

INQ= 16:16:00ISH Ciara....the business

world brings in ideas to raise
standards, but the business world pays
their employees to work for them

RUNS= (END SOT)

OQ= And to that concern, school board

members urged teachers and parents to

head to Roanoke city council.

Board members are planning on
re-evaluating this change after one
semester and get feedback...possibly
tweak things if need be.Natasha Ryan,

NAT BREAK VT FOOTBALL ACTION OR

And nothing brings the fun to a

Keeping food safe from bacteria
is a multi-step process.

One of the major ones is
seperating your food to avoid
cross-contamination.

The Virginia Food Safety Task

boards for raw meats and raw vegetables
and wash them throughly after use.

A major key for staying bacteria

It begins this school year.

Here's a look at the new

TAKE SCHOOL SCHEDULE FS GFX TAKE SCHOOL SCHEDULE FS GFX

The elementary schools will be

The larger schools will be in

The smaller schools will go from

why not bump the starting time up

questions...including how this will
affect sporting events and

one question from teachers....will they

File Tape That is, fighting bacteria.

One of the major steps for doing
this is making sure the food is
prepared at the proper temperature and
then stored at the right temp, as well.

Bacteria grows rapidly between
40-and-140 degrees.

So the Virginia Food Safety Task
Force advises to make sure you keep
your hot foods hot and your cold foods
cold.

keeping your food at proper

wash your hands and utensils after
handling raw meat.

rinse and dry your hands with a clean
towel.
