Thousands of airline passengers in
the U- S and the U- K are facing delays
and unprecedented security measures.

British authorities have foiled a
plot to blow up as many as 20 aircraft
in mid- flight between the U- S and
Great Britain, using liquid explosives
smuggled in hand luggage.

So far 21- people have been arrested
in connection with the alleged plot--
which officials say has all the

Track: "Mass murder on an unimaginable
scale" That's how British

authorities describe a huge terrorist

plot to SIMULTANEOUSLY blow up

SEVERAL planes headed to the US, using
explosives smuggled in hand

luggage.

JOHN REID/BRITISH HOME SECRETARY

HAD THIS PLOT BEEN CARRIED OUT, THE
LOSS OF LIFE TO INNOCENT CIVILIANS

WOULD HAVE BEEN ON AN UNPRECEDENTED
SCALE.

American homeland security says the
plot was the real deal -- that it

carried the footprint of Al-Qaeda....

Britain's airports are in lockdown.
hundreds of flights CANCELED until

further notice -- stranding thousands
of passengers.

Across the United Kingdom and Europe --
they spoke of

fear...frustration...and chaos.

SOT - NO NAME AVAIL. WE'RE STILL VERY

MUCH IN THE DARK, AND HAVEN'T

GOT A CLUE WHAT IS GOING ON.

ON CAMERA BRIDGE:

CHARLIE D'AGATA/LONDON

THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT RAISED THE
SECURITY ALERT TO ITS HIGHEST LEVEL,

SUGGESTING AN IMMINENT ATTACK. THAT
LEVEL REMAINS IN PLACE AMID CONCERNS

THAT THE PLOT MAY NOT BE COMPLETELY
CRUSHED.

British police arrested 21 people in
early morning raids spanning London

and its suburbs -- and further north in
Birmingham.

Intelligence officials say "the main
players" are among those arrested,

but warn there may be dozens more
suspects at large who were in on the

plot.

It appears the plan was to trigger some
kind of liquid explosive carried

on board.

The only carry-ons allowed NOW --
passports, wallets, only the

essentials - in a clear plastic bag.

ALL liquids - are BANNED. ..even

mothers carrying milk for their babies

are being told to TASTE it themselves
before taking it on board.

Authorities say terrorists came
critically close to pulling the plot

off. As one put it -- they weren't
sitting on the airplane yet -- but

they were pretty close.

Many of you probably heard Historic
Henry Street comes alive the weekend of
July 22nd.....SO alive that the new
organization that put the festival on
had enough money to hand over a two
thousand dollar check to TAP, Total
Action Against Poverty.

TAP is currently renovating the
Hotel Dumas -- turning it into a
cultural and artistic center.....a
project the Blue Ridge Blues Society
stands behind.

The center will house Opera
Roanoke, Northwest Jazz Event, an
audotorium and a music lab.
