jetliners.

Meanwhile security remains a top
priority at British Airports today.

TRACK:

The terror threat level in Britian
remains at its highest because

investigators don't know if every
'terror' suspect has been caught.

So far around two dozen arrests have
been made in the U-K.

All of the suspects are British born...
like Don Stewart-Whyte (white).... who
converted to Islam just a few months
ago.

In his hometown... disbelief.

The first arrests were made in
Pakistan.... and police continue to
round up suspects there.

One of the apprehended: a Briton named
Rashid Rauf. (rah-oof)

Authorities believe he has connections
with al-Qaida and may have directed the
bomb plot from Pakistan.

Investigators say the plan was to board
as many as ten U-S bound jets and
destroy them in mid-flight with liquid
explosives.


Security sources tell CBS News the
group also discussed detonating the
bombs as the planes flew over American
cities.

At London's Heathrow airport security
remains very tight.

Authorities think there could be more
plots planned and more terrorists ready
to go into action.

"so there is a continuing ongoing
threat and so this is not the last time
we will hear about a terrorist plot
being foiled in this country."



TRACK:

In the U-S investigators are pursuing
leads related to the foiled plot but
say they've found no evidence of
terrorist activity.

As far as British intelligence is
concerned the only terror activity
they're after is getting all those
behind the plot, behind bars. .

checkpoints.

Many passengers said the scene
was more chaotic at other major

Some passengers could encounter
more security checks once they get
through the checkpoint.

Yesterday, the T-S-A started to
conduct random gate checking.

That means inspectors can
randomly check passengers' bags at the
gate to make sure they're not carrying
any liquid or gel materials.

way last night that the insanity
defense is rarely believable.

A jury found 24-year-Michael

Edward Jones Holmes guilty of first
degree murder.

Last summer, Holmes walked into a
neighbor's apartment on Madison Avenue
shot David Ray in the leg and fatally
shot Connie Mills.

The defense never contested the
facts.

Attorney's argued Holmes was
hearing voices and legally insane at
the time.

But the jury didn't buy it, only
taking a little over an hour to find
him guilty.

They then recommended he spend
the rest of his life behind bars.

Resources Defense Council are on an 18
city tour across the country to

Natural Foods Co-op in Roanoke.

is a Ford Escape.

Environmentalists point out you'll

Severe weather in Idaho Friday
morning

VO NAT is blamed for knocking out power
to thousands of people, triggering
several wildfires and the destruction
of a several homes.

In Tipanook, downed power lines
sparked several small wildfires with

one of those fires destroying two
homes. Firefighters say very strong
winds moved the flames quickly.
Homeowners were evacuated and spent the
night in a shelter.

VO NAT The triple digit temperatures in
Oklahoma sparked an interesting
question... can you bake cookies in a
car parked outside in the heat?

The CBS station in Tulsa gave it
a try. They put a batch of chocolate
chip cookies in one of the employee's
car. They're supposed to cook for 10
minutes at 350 degrees.

They put the cookies in just
before 10am, cooked them all day, and
by the 5 o'clock news, they were a
little crunchy, but ready to eat.

By the way... temperatures inside
his car topped 209-degrees.

troops now in Lebanon.

This as the U-N Security council adopts
a resolution authorizing 15-thousand
peace keeping troops and calls for an
immediate cease fire.

Just hours later Israel launched
several attacks into Southern Lebanon.
This time reportedly targeting an
office occupied by a money lending
division of Hezbollah.

today near Lebanon's border with Syria.
This was the last escape route for the

Lebanese and for humanitarian aid
entering the country from Syria. Israel
says the attacks are to halt the

Meanwhile, the Israeli army is
investigating an alleged attack by one
its drones on a refugee convoy. At
least seven people were killed and
dozens injured as they tried to flee
the country.

before.

late June and early July.

individual flood damage assistance in a
number of counties across the region.

On August 4th, Governor Tim Kaine
had asked FEMA to re-evaluate its
decision.

But that apparently didn't work.

The counties affected include
Alleghany, Botetourt, Montgomery, and
the city of Salem.

If FEMA had granted the appeal,
affected residents would have received
funding in the form of grants and low
interest loans to help with damages.

The bronze statue of Lee atop his
steed Traveller on Richmond's Monument
Avenue is being renovated.

Several seams on the statue have
separated.

They'll be repaired, while mortar
along the base will be replaced.

A coating will also be applied to
protect the hundred year old statue
from city- pollution.

The Lee statue is the only one on
Monument Avenue that's owned by the
state.


It will take nearly five months
and 400- thousand dollars to complete
the project... just in time for Lee's
birthday this winter.

Police in Blacksburg found the
"bird you can bank on" yesterday
afternoon in an area of the Deerfield
Subdivision in the Tom's Creek Basin.

The bird disappeared earlier this
month.

Seventy five fiberglass statues
of the Hokie bird are placed across
Blacksburg as part of the Gobble de Art
Program -- designed to raise awareness
for the arts.

This one was apparently undamaged
--- and will be put back in its

original spot at First National Bank on

North Main Street.

getting ready for another trek.

This weekend he will hike the
Appalachian Trail in Bland County.

community service and awareness
organization called Walk About America
and last year he DID walk from the
