Virignia Tech campus.

The situation all started early
Sunday morning...

That's when inmate William
Charles Morva was taken by deputies
from the Montgomery Regional Jail.

(END SOT) morning when a Montgomery County
Deputy.... brought inmate William
Charles Morva to the emergency room at
Montgomery Regional Hospital for
what's described as a sprained leg and
wrist.
At 2:30 Sunday morning Morva
allegedly overpowered the deputy---
and took the deputy's gun- injuring the
deputy in the process. Morva also
allegedly shot and killed security
guard 33-year-old Derrick McFarland---
who tried to help.
Morva then took off on foot while
tactical teams and police surround
Montgomery Regional hospital.
The search for Morva went on all
day Sunday and into the night.. but it
wasn't until Monday morning that Morva
was spotted again.
This time about five or six miles
from the hospital... along the
Huckleberry Trail--- about a half mile
from the Montgomery Regional Library
where the trail begins.
Sheriff's authorities say Morva
fired shots again this time killing
Montgomery County Corporal Eric
Sutphin---
A couple of hours later... Monday
morning... police believe Morva may
be on the Virginia Tech campus-
tactical teams surround the Squires
Student Center- and evacaute everyone
there-----
Tech cancels classes and closes the
University-- tells students to go tot
hehir dorms or apartments and stay put.
A short while later police report
Morva was not at the Squires Student
Center.

Hylton had been shot and killed by a
shoplifting suspect.
Twenty-one year old Christopher Holmes
had gotten Officer Hylton's pistol away
from him.
Holmes was beating the officer.
Mike Akers saw what was happening and
stepped in to help.

TOWARDS ME, STARTED LAUGHING, THEN HE
STARTED SHOOTING. NEVER SAID ANYTHING,
JUST LAUGHED. THAT'S ALL HE EVER DONE,

OQ= Holmes apparently couldn't disengage
the safety device on the pistol in time
to get off a round in HIS direction.
Deputy Eric Sutphin was one of many
officers who moved in to help subdue
the shooter.
Holmes was about to drive off, when
Deputy Sutphin got there. The
sheriff's deputy rammed the fleeing
suspect's car with his own vehicle.

OQ= Holmes opened fire on Sutphin, grazing
the deputy's arm in two places.
The two exchanged fire, as Holmes took
off on foot to the McDonald's parking
lot.
Confronted there by three officers,
Holmes refused to give up. They said
he leveled his gun at them, before all
three opened fire killing Holmes.
Sutphin downplayed the incident two
years later when presented with the
medal of valor.

had been in jail accused of robbing the
Glade Road Deli Mart in Blacksburg.
Before those charges....he was a
well known fixture in downtown
Blacksburg.
He was seen hanging out at many
of the local restaurants.
His friends in the area say
they're shocked about what happened

Morva was caught in a briar patch
near the rugby fields on the Virginia
Tech campus.....for those of you
unfamiliar, we're talking about the new
rugby field, between Lane Stadium and
the Tech Airport on Tech Center
Drive....
That is all happened on the
Huckleberry Trail.....and the trail is
where Morva was spotted early this
morning and allegedly killed Corporal
Eric Sutphin.
We understand no shots were fired
when Morva was taken into custody. He
has already been in and out of the
Magistrate's office.....

how it will try to help them relocate
-- but Stevens says there are still a
lot of unanswered questions.
