Derrick McFarland.

Police say he came to the aid of
a deputy while Morva was making his
escape.

That's how his friend Jason
Goldman remembers him.

His friend said McFarland used to
watch over him and protect him from
bullies in elementary school.

He is originally from Baltimore

family plans to conduct a Memorial
Service Thursday in the
Blacksburg-Christiansburg area. The
funeral will be held Monday in his

job in Brookneal.

planned to close its Brookneal plant
unless a buyer could be found for the
textile business.

Under federal law, today was the
earliest the company could start laying
off some of the plant's 300 workers.

But a Dan River spokesman says
nothing has been decided yet, as the
company continues to seek a buyer for
either the building or the business.

Dan River says there's been
interest in the facility but no deal is
pending.

record setting earnings today.

The winner? Virginia's schools.

million dollars.

Lottery money accounts for ten-
percent of spending for K- through- 12
education.

For example, Roanoke City schools
will receive nearly two- million
dollars, Lynchburg City-- one- point-
two million.

Next year's checks, however, are
NOT expected to be as fat, since North
Carolina's new lottery is cutting into
sales along the Virginia border.

Governor Tim Kaine says the
decline was expected and education
officials are planning accordingly.

tomorrow and earlier this week the the
school

ENG#=1 VO-NAT

VO-NAT superintendent in the county,

Tony Brads, got all of the high school
coaches at James River and Lord
Botetourt together to announce a new
initiative.

Beginning this school year, all
of the varsity and jayvee sports teams
at the two schools will play each on an
annual basis.

In recent years - the two county
rivals had all but quit playing each
with the exception of a few sports.

The hope is that the new plan
will invigorate fans and players and at
the same time keep sportsmanship in the
forefront.

the county is a great for the most
part, but as Ferguson said, James River
has few students and fewer athletes.

That type of disparity is usually
most glaring in a sport like football.

This Friday the two will play a
benefit game in Daleville, but starting

next year it counts in the standings.
