afternoon about the escape of a
Montgomery County jail inmate.
TAKE MORVA FS TAKE MUGSHOT

24 year old William Morva escaped
from a deputy at the Montgomery
Regional Hospital early Sunday morning.

Police say he overpowered the
deputy, took his gun and shot and
killed security officer Derrick
McFarland.

Investigators say Morva also shot
and killed Corporal Eric Sutphin, while
on the loose.

Saturday Morva told jail staff he fell
out of bed and injuried his right wrist
and ankle.

He was examined by medical staff
at the jail and they recommended he be
taken here to the hospital.

Sunday He left the jail at 11:40 at
night.

Because of his injuries he right
wrist was not cuffed.

The deputy took leg irons in case
he needed them but did not put them on
because of the ankle injury.

The hospital staff x-rayed his
wrist and ankle and both were diagnosed
to be severely sprained.

At some point Morva asked to use
the bathroom.

Hall says Morva ripped a toliet
paper dispenser out of the wall.. it
still had the screws in it and used it
as a weapon against the deputy.

He knocked the deputy unconcious
and took his weapon.

that. Security officer Derrick
McFarland ran to help. Police say he
was shot and killed by Morva in the
hallway.

his way or shot his way through a glass

door to espcape at 2:35 in the morning.

Kimberly I want to let you know
the deputy injuried in the escape is
out of the hospital today.

He suffered broken facial bones
and a concussion.

The sheriff's office is NOT
releasing his name for his quote well
being while he is recovering.

Rachel, we know that Morva was injured
when he was being transported. So, how
exactly was he handcuffed Sunday
morning?

And, we should mention that Corporal
Eric Sutphin's funeral is scheduled for
tomorrow. What should the public know
about the services?

killed a teenager in Botetourt County.

about a half mile south of exit 150
near Troutville.

Sixteen year old Victoria Lynn
Phillips died at the scene.

She was wearing a seatbelt at the
time of the crash.

Police say she ran off the side
of the road, overcorrected, was T-Boned
by a pick-up truck, glanced off and
then hit another truck.

Phillips was a cheerleader at
Lord Botetourt High School.

John Mark Karr will be taken to

Boulder after declining to fight
extradition in a Los Angeles courtroom.

Karr stood shackled and silent as the
judge read off the charges. But he

did express concern over a potential
jury pool being tainted by his

prison garb in court. Outside, a lawyer
who consulted with the former

teacher said he is looking forward to
meeting with Colorado authorities.

He is anxious to have an opportunity to
address the allegations against

him.

Just what those allegations are is
still in question. Officials here in

Colorado have yet to announce what Karr
will be charged with or comment

on any evidence they have, saying the
investigation is still in progress.

Whatever the charges, DNA testing is
expected to play a major role in

making them stick. Karr reportedly gave

a sample when he was apprehended

in Thailand last week where he made
incriminating statements in a public

confession.

Karr said he loved JonBenet and her
death was an accident. But Karr's

words don't mean much to JonBenet's
family, who just wants justice.

"Whether this gentleman did it or
someone else did it, let me tell you

this was no accident."

There is still no word on exactly when
Karr will be brought to Colorado

but it has to happen by the end of
next week.

athlete caught cheating has admitted to
doing so.

:00 Sprinter Justin Gatlin - the

world's fastest man - was banned from
from track and field for eight years
last night.

It could have been a lifetime ban
had Gatlin not cooperated with
authorities.

Gatlin tested positive in April
for testosterone or other steroids.
And as part of his punishment, he will
forfeit the world record he tied in
May, when he ran the 100 meters in
9-point-77 seconds.

Plus, since he's 24, the eight
year ban might as well be a lifetime
ban.

He can appeal the length of the
punishment, but he is not denying the
validity of the test.

Gatlin won the Olympic Gold medal
in the 100 meter dash at 2004 Olympic
Games in Athens.
