from across the state were attending
the funeral of Corporal Sutphin,
someone was spreading roofing nails
beneath their vehicles.

officers from joining the funeral
procession. Christiansburg police
believe the damage was limited to a
couple of vehicles.

But they say about 50 pounds of
one-inch stainless-steel roofing nails
were spread under cars in at least

three different locations.

One officer described the
incident as "mind-boggling," and asked
anyone with information to call the
Christiansburg Police Department.

teenagers have died in our area because
they overcorrected.

Tuesday 16-year-old Torie
Phillips was killed in a car crash in
Botetourt County on Route 11.

Police believe Phillips went off

the side of the road, overcorrected and
crossed into oncoming traffic.

GRAPHIC=None A federal judge today issued a stern

rebuke to city leaders in Martinsville

who tried to take over the local cable
system.

While Martinsville cable presented the
case as "a right of first refusal,"
Judge Michael Urbanski ruled the city
can't compete with Comcast.

He said Martinsville Cable is not
equipped to run a cable system and
lacks legal authority to own or operate
one.

The judge called it a brazen leverage
attempt, pointing out the city was
trying to "fill a revenue shortfall"
created by closing the city landfill.

Unless the city appeals today's ruling,
it looks like Comcast will continue to
operate cable service in Martinsville.

following this season.
