Friday Football Extra

GRAPHIC=FFE Good evening everybody and

welcome to yet another year of Friday
Football Extra here on Your Hometown
Station.

Hard to believe the program began
way back in 1984, but tonight we are
ready to turn out the opening of season
number 23.

In the next 30 minutes we'll
check out most of tonight's games, plus
profile a retiring coach who has been
with Friday Football Extra all 23
years.

We'll also tell you how you can
once again go to the ACC Championship
game in December without spending a
dime.

GRAPHIC=CARROLL/FLOYD But first let's check out some of

tonight's highlights and travel on
scenic Route 221 all the way to
Hillsville where the Carroll County
Cavaliers welcomed Floyd County to town
for their annual season opening bash.

Floyd Co. vs. Carroll Co. The Cavaliers were pumped up as
they hit the field for their season
opener against the Buffs.

Early in the first on their
second possession, the Cavs are on
Floyd's 40 and J.T. Turner will roll
all the way down to the 14 yard line
before anyone closes in on him -
picking up 26 yards.

Three plays later, Andy Singleton
goes right up the middle for the
touchdown. The point after is good and
it's 7-to-nothing Carroll County on
top.

On the ensuing kickoff - Floyd's
Kent Moles will field the ball, weave
his way through traffic, and put a
wicked move on the final defender as he
takes it all the way fof the score.
The Buffaloes miss the extra point, but
cut the lead to 7-to-6.

Carroll was not phased. In the
second quarter - Singleton goes
straight up the middle from the three
and it's another Cavalier touchdown as
Carroll takes a 14-to-6 lead on the
Buffs.

The Floyd Defense would stand

tall and try to stay close as John
Mathis and Moles get the sack. *CG ffefinal Floyd Co.
12 Then just before the half after a Carroll Co. nice return, Floyd's Luke Harris will 27 drop back , look to the sideline, but
he is intercepted by Singleton and the
Cavs stop another Floyd County drive.
and get the win 27-to-12.

aired this throw out 32 yards into the
hands of Sid Brown. He hauls it in for
the six and Demons convert a two to
make it 8-to-nothing early on.

Later in the first -
Christiansburg's Bond hands off to Zac
Evans from his own nine yard line and
he will take it 91 yards the other
direction on the back breaking play.
The Blue Demons take a 15 point lead on
the TD dash.

In the second, the Bobcats come
to life and finally wake up. Abram

short pass, and Webb will carry it in
for the touchdown. It's now 15-to-7. *CG ffefinal Radford

he's been there ever since. With four
more wins, Edwards will reach the 200

TAYLOR EDWARDS/28th SEASON at
MARTINSVILLE:

Edwards has 196 wins, including 11

UVA stars Shawn Moore, and Nikki

The 1988 state championship squad ranks
as one of Taylor's favorites, although
not the most talented he's ever
coached.

TAYLOR:

Edwards may have won another couple of
state titles if not for the Salem
Spartans, who beat Martinsville in the
1998 and 1999 state semifinals as well
as the regional semis in 1996.

This year's Bulldog club will try to
rebound from the first losing season in
Edwards' tenure, a 4 and 7 campaign in
2005. With 16 starters returning, the
redhead's last campaign could be a
memorable one.

As for how he'll spend his time in
retirement, Edwards won't be too far

away from a racetrack. He's attended
every race at Martinsville since he's
been in town, and also has a soft spot
in his heart for Daytona and Charlotte.
