GRAPHIC=NONE Billy Ray Manns killed Martinsville

shop-owner Lisa Thomas nearly six years
ago, now.

The 21-year old convict admits it was
"wrong."

In a hour-long telephone interview from
prison last week, Manns called it "a
bad decision" .

days shy of his 16th birthday- -when he
went into DeMarcos clothing store, shot
and killed Lisa Thomas.

Manns was at first reluctant to be
interviewed, but eventually seemed
eager to talk.

He complained about his name

conspiracy to commit capital murder.

Having originally faced the death

apologetic, though he could not explain
why he killed the 30-year old clothing

honor.

OQ= Manns HAD claimed the victim's husband,

Maverick Thomas had paid him to kill
Lisa. Manns also implicated another
member of the Nation of Islam,
Malvester Dixon.

Murder for hire charges against Dixon
and Thomas were recently dropped, and
now Manns says he was NOT in it for the
money.

So I asked Manns what he DID get out of
it.

Carilion recently hired former Bedford
City police chief Milton Graham as its
director of security services.

Heading up security services at
Lewis-Gale, is Brack Fore, a former
security officer of 20-plus years.

Both hospitals say they have 24-hour
security, but differ in operation.

At Carilion, there is an actual police
department -- staffed with 27-sworn
police officers, 16-security officers
and four full-time dispatchers.

At Lewis-Gale, no police department,
but eleven security officers hired and
trained by the hospital.

But, Carilion is also a lot bigger,

with about six thousand employees,
compared to Lewis-Gale's 15-hundred.

That likely plays a role in the number
of reported security calls a year --
Carilion more than 21-thousand,
Lewis-Gale, about six-thousand.

Despite their differences, both
hospitals say they are always looking
at ways to improve.

years.

He testified he neither saw nor

While it was breezy that morning,
it was not as windy as it was later.

Ham said he worked in the yard
off and on for six or seven hours, not
noticing anything until his neighbor
came running with a garden hose,
yelling "FIRE!"

The judge did not rule today.

If Ham is convicted, he could be held
liable for the cost of putting out the

2005 Season That has been an adjustment for
starting quarterback Jonathan Wilson
who has been through a lot during his
time in Lexington. Wilson the
Rockbridge County Product came back
from a broken ankle last season to put
up some impressive numbers, he was

third in the Big South in Passing
Yards. Now he will be called upon to
use his legs even more so Wilson began
preparing in the off-season.
