into an accident Friday night that left
a six-year-old boy dead.
It happened in the parking lot
of Payless on Valley View Boulevard in
Roanoke.

the scene that night.
She says while a mother shopped
inside Payless, her children waited in
the car....all except 6-year-old

Walker says no one actually saw
19-year-old Shani Mitchener hit the
six-year-old, but everyone certainly
heard the teenager calling for help.
The boy was taken to the hospital
but died from his injuries.
Police have filed no charges at
this point, and say the investigation
is continuing.

GRAPHIC=Shooting An arrest has been made in
connection with a shooting in Danville.

The shooting happened around one
o'clock yesterday morning in the
parking lot of the American Legion
Hall.
Officers say a 31-year-old man
suffered gunshots wounds to his arm,
leg and chest.
He was transferred to Duke for
further treatment.
No word on his condition.

Police have charged 25-year-old
Ricky Jerome Myers of Chatham with
malicious wounding.
He's being held in the city jail
under no bond.
Police say the hall was being
rented for a family reunion when the
incident happened.

organization on the fast track to some
needed cash.

Yesterday's show was organized by
Circuit City and all the proceeds were
donated to the local Boys and Girls
Club.
A lot of different competitions
brought out a wide variety of cars
ready to compete.
Old and new mixed as everyone
tried to determine which car would take
top honors for looks and sound.
Organizers hoped to raise about
three-thousand dollars from the event.

effort helped some students get the
supplies they need for the school year.

The U-S Kids Care group set out
these paper bags last weekend and asked
that residents fill the bags with
school supplies.
The paper and pencils will be
donated to children who didn't have the
means to buy the back-to-school
necessities for themselves.
The group spent a hot day
yesterday afternoon in South Roanoke
collecting the bags and say they were
happy with what they got.

GRAPHIC=Fatal Accident An accident in Grayson County
Friday night left one man dead.
It happened at around 9:00 near
Grassy Creek, close to the North
Carolina border.
23-year-old Joshua Bryson
Sizemore was traveling east on Route
725 when his vehicle ran off the road,
hit an embankment, and overturned.
Sizemore died at the scene.
A passenger was transported to the
hospital.
There is no word on that person's
condition, or if alcohol was involved.

summer.
And that's why Virginia's grape
harvest is shaping up as a good one for
vintners.

File Tape A state *viticulturist* says the
grape harvest will begin one week ahead
of normal, probably because of summer
heat.
The harvest will begin this week
in southern Virginia and will run
through October in the northern part of
the state.
Additional *vineyard acreage*
coming into production means this
year's crop
might top last year's 56-hundred tons.
But too much rain could spoil
that. As harvest nears, dry weather
helps intensify the flavor of grapes.
