Eight hurricanes in all have hit this
state in the last two years.. and with
Ernesto threatening to be the first of
2006.. gas lines grew.. water went fast
at grocery stores.. and hardware stores
had their usual run on plywood and
generators.

through Wilma and in Davie, Florida
last year and I was out of power for 15
days

Just strong Ernesto will be when it
reaches Florida is still up in the
air.. while flood waters claimed the
life of one person in Haiti.. eastern
cuba only got a soaking from a weak
tropical storm.

BRIDGE: Forecasters say Ernesto spent
so much time over land chances are

diminishing it will regain hurricane
strength.. but there is still the
possibility warm gulf waters will rev
up the storm.

Ernesto will first take aim at the
Keys.. where authorities urged mobile
home residents to evacuate and ordered

clinched the second half Carolina
League pennant last night with an 8 to
2 win over Winston-Salem.

The Avs have now won 13 straight
games and head home tonight to open up
a seven game homestand at Salem
Memorial.

The Avs won the title in 2001

when they got in the playoffs as
wildcard team, but this is the first
divisional title for Salem since 1988.

continue picking through the wreckage
of a Greyhound bus that flipped onto a
median, killing at least five people.

median, killing at least five people.

released about how the huge forest fire
started last March in Blue Ridge.

yard, after he dumped a bucket of ashes
from his wood stove.

out behind the shed as he has for eight
years.

He testified he neither saw nor
felt anything hot in the bucket.

While it was breezy that morning,
it was not as windy as it was later.

Ham said he worked in the yard
off and on for six or seven hours, not
noticing anything until his neighbor
came running with a garden hose,
yelling "FIRE!"

The judge did not rule yesterday.

If Ham is convicted, he could be held
liable for the cost of putting out the

against a Campbell County woman,
accused of embezzling money from her
local volunteer fire department.

41-year-old Carol Deann McCune is
charged with 13 counts of grand
larceny.
