hurricane.. Coming ashore as a weak

tropical storm. There's little damage

here in Miami....and further

south... power went out briefly for
about 7,000 customers.

There was some drenching rain and wind
overnight...but nothing like the

powerful hurricanes that have slammed
this region in recent years. And

while more than a thousand people in
Miami-Dade and Broward counties

sought refugee in shelters...a good
number of people rode out the storm

in local bars.

Ernesto is now tracking to the
north....and could gain strength before

hitting the carolinas.. Forecasters are
still cautioning anyone in its

path to watch out for gusty winds and
rains that could potentially cause

floods.

fortunately there were no significant
floods in the Miami area....only

a half an inch of rain was recorded
this morning at the airport.

Ernesto did leave behind the kind of
waves that surfers dream

about....while everyone else returns to
business as usual...that is...

until the next storm comes calling.

caused a fire that gutted an historic
home in Lynchburg yesterday afternoon.

Street today, tearing down walls and
removing some of the rubble.

The 107- year- old home caught fire
just before noon yesterday, leaving six
residents homeless.

Parts of the house are still
burning, and authorities say it's going

Montgomery County yesterday.

Christiansburg Police and
deputies with the Sheriff's Department
made 16 arrests.

Those who were taken into custody
are accused of being low to mid- level
drug suppliers.

The arrests are a result of more
than 70 indictments handed down by a
special grand jury.

Both agencies continue to search
for the people.

No one was injured during the
operation.

finishing touches on a Habitat for
Humanity house.

have been working to complete the
"R-house."

According to a school
spokeswoman, by nine o'clock last night
the house was to be as finished as it
will be at the SALEM location.

Even though a Roanoke family will
eventually call it home - the project
has helped students get to know one
another before the school year even
begins.

Sunday After just winning an Emmy Sunday

night, Barry Manilow underwent surgery
on Monday morning to repair cartilage
tears in both hips.

The veteran singer- songwriter
actually took his Emmy trophy into the
hospital operating room as a good- luck
charm.

Manilow's publicist says the
operation went "swimmingly."

His recovery is expected to take six
to eight weeks.

Manilow fans will be happy to hear
that the singer will return to his
regular Las Vegas gig in early
November.

They created a "human gazpacho",
hurling 220- thousand pounds of
tomatoes at one another to mark La
Tomatina, which is one of the world's
messiest festivals.

Fans from around the world converge
on the normally sleepy town

on the last Wednesday of August.

It is believed the manic free- for-
all started as an argument between two
carnival participants in 19- 45.

The rules say the tomatoes have to
be squashed up a little before they are
thrown.

After pelting each other for an
hour, revellers jump in a nearby river
to clean themselves, while the fire
brigade hoses down the streets.
