GRAPHIC=FFE Good evening everybody and

welcome to a soggy edition of Friday
Football Extra here on Your Hometown
Station.

Now in our 23rd year of existence
- we have never missed an episode of
Friday Football Extra despite a couple
of close calls.

In 2004 when Hurricane Ivan
rolled through the area - many folks
got ahead of the storm and actually
played on Thursday. We covered the
games that night and then put the show
on Friday evening in this normal time
slot.

Then many of you may remember
back on September 23rd of 1989 when
only one game was played that night.
Hurricane Hugo wiped out everything
that evening except Brookville and
Altavista.

We also put on a show with just
one game back on September 6th of 1996
as Hurricane Fran hit the Carolina
coast the night before. Almost every
school in Virginia called off games
early that Friday morning. But down in
Washington County, Holston and Rural

Retreat decided to play and we watched
them do it.

GRAPHIC=BYRD/HIDDEN VALLEY

Tonight, although a number of
schools postponed their games until
tomorrow night and some even elected to
play on Labor Day - we have the
highlights of eight games for you
tonight from Vinton to Galax.

And let's get things started at
Bob Patterson Stadium in Vinton where
the William Byrd Terriers hooked up
with the Hidden Valley Titans in the
season opener for both teams.

OQ=...OF THIRD QUARTER." << The Terrier fans were out in full
(END SOT) force and in full spirit on this damp

evening as they kicked off the 06
campaign.

But Hidden Valley also came to
play - as quarterback Brian Asquith
calls his own number and he will roll
off the side of the line and picks up a
handful of yards on the keeper for the
Titans.

But the Byrd would take control
and keep it on the ground. Landon
Johnson the quarterback hands off to
R.J. Brown. He will hit the right end,
get into the open and take it 21 yards
before he's caught and brought down -
but the Titans' defense would hold.

The Titans were back in business
from their own 40, and this time David
Turner - the sophomore - hits the
middle of the line wide open, he cuts
it to the near sideline, the secondary
can't catch him either and Turner takes
it 52 yards to the house to make it
6-to-nothng after the missed the kick.

Now in the second quarter - the
Terriers would have a chance to answer
back. From their own 22 yard line,
Johnson takes off out of the shot gun,
hits the middle - then the outside and
he will take the pill 78 yards for the
score with the help of some nice
blocks. That kick was missed - as well
and it was tied at 6 at halftime.

Coming into the third quarter the
Titans would stick to their game plan
and keep it on the ground as Asquith
keeps, scrambles, breaks some tackles -
eventually turns up field and manages
to pick up a dozen yards.

A few plays later, Asquith goes
to the air and he will connect with
T.C. Bane on the pitch and catch good
for a 12 yards and a first down.

Later in the third, on a first
and goal from inside the 10 - Turner
will takes the rock again and roll into
the endzone as the sophomore scores his
second TD of the game. It's Now
12-to-6.

Asquith then added the two point
conversion calling his own number and
the lead is up to 14-to-6 Titans.

Then to start third fourth,

Turner will pound in his third TD of
the night on the 1 yard blast.

The Titans outplay Byrd in the
second half - as the former student
J.R. Edwards gets the best of his
former coach Jeff Highfill - at least
on this night.

Patrick Henry vs. Pulaski Co. The Pulaski County Cougars
entered the stadium tonight coming off
of their first losing season since 1978
a season ago.

The Cougars are on the move early
in the game from the PH 42 and Benji
Poindexter will go right up the middle
and keep up 11 yards before Jevon Brown
brings him down.

Two plays later - on a first and
ten from the 31 - Poindexter goes up
the middle again and this time he goes
all the way for the score to make it
7-to-nothing Cougars.

In the second quarter, Pulaski
would take advantage of great field
position after a punt and on this third
and three from the five Nubian Peak
runs to the left and dives in for the
score. It's 12-to-nothing Cougars. *CG ffefinal Patrick Henry

Giles vs. Blacksburg Fans from both schools said the :00 heck with the weather tonight as they
endured an annoying, persistent

The players also had to deal with
the elements. This snap squirts
through the hands of Donald Gresh, but
the Blacksburg quarterback would
recover it.

After three and out, Giles would
get rolling with Nathan Tanner taking
the snap and sprinting toward the
endzone. Tanner will outrun everybody
to the house as the Giles lead expands
to 14-to-nothing late in the second
quarter.

The Bruins struggled on the

ground as a slew of Spartan defenders
drive back Latrell Keys for a 7 yard
loss.

With under two minutes to go in
the first half - Blacksburg would
finally get something going thanks to
its defense - as Gregory Keys bobbles
the Tanner pass, but finally is able to
secure it. He will takes it 13 yards
