an escape in Montgomery County left two
men dead, and a community in shock.

August 20th William Charles Morva escaped
from custody while inside the
Montgomery Regional Hospital.

Police say during that escape,
security officer Derrick McFarland was
shot and killed.

As the man-hunt continued into
the next day, Montgomery Deputy
Corporal Eric Sutphin was also shot and
killed while patrolling the Huckleberry
Trail.

Morva was caught and taken into

custody.

The group raised about

killed in Iraq this week.

On Wednesday 18-year-old Colin
Wolfe died in combat operations in Al
Anbar province.

Reports indicate that Wolfe was

riding in the back of a truck when the
vehicle struck a roadside bomb.

Wolfe was deployed in July and
was scheduled to return in February.

Police say a pick up truck
pulling a camper was traveling
northbound.

It then crossed the median and

began its journey at Washington and Lee
University.

This freshman class includes
students from over 40 states and 11
foreign countries.

W and L has an undergraduate
population of approximately 1,770.

The school also has a new

leader later this fall.

Classes will begin next Thursday.

winds through Patrick County on its way
from Rocky Mount to Clintwood.

Today, dignitaries gathered in
Meadows of Dan to cut the ribbon on a
five- acre corn maze, that features the
logo of the Crooked Road.

The opening of the maze coincides
with the 2nd annual Chinquapin
(CHINK-uh-pin) Festival that
celebrates the arts and crafts and
agricultural heritage of Meadows of
Dan.

The festival continues through
Labor Day. The corn maze will be open
on weekends in September, and Wednesday
through Sunday during October.
