GRAPHIC=Shooting In the news, a shooting in
Danville sent two men to the hospital
early this morning.
At around 1:00 police recieved a
911 call from a motorist claiming that
he had two shooting victims in the car.
Shortly thereafter police stopped
the vehicle on Central Boulevard and
both men were transported to the
Danville Regional Medical Center.
Police say that they believe that
the men were shot with a shotgun in the
2100 block of North Main Street.
One of the victims, a 24-year-old
from Chatham sustained injuries to the
face. The second victim, a 20-year-old
from Danville, suffered leg injuries.
Both are listed in stable condition.
Police are not releasing any
names and the investigation is
continuing.

Industry will issue no citations as a
result of a deadly tower accident last
spring.

March 2006 48-year-old Michael Hinsberger
HINES-burger and 60-year-old Gregory
Harrington had just finished installing
an antenna on this radio tower last
March when the cable they were being
lowered with broke.
Both men fell about 30 feet.
The fall killed Harrington.
Investigators found the wire-
ropes the two men used as a life- line
did not meet required standards.
The men were also attached to the
same line, and should have each had
their own.
No citations were issued though
because Harrington was the sole owner
of the company.

Governor Tim Kaine says he's open
to talking about a government ban on
smoking in bars and restaurants.
It's an idea Roanoke Senator
Brandon Bell introduced last year--
legislation that was stomped out by the
House of Delegates.
When he took office, Kaine says
he was surprised to learn there is NOT
a uniform smoking policy for **state**
buildings.
As the employer of executive
branch workers, Kaine says it's an
issue he takes seriously.

Ernesto is up to six in Virginia.

Friday The latest death was reported in
Newport News where a woman died of
carbon monoxide poisoning after
plugging in a portable generator in her
garage.
Three people died in storm
related car crashes.
A Gloucester couple was killed
when a tree crushed their modular home.
Preliminary damage estimates from
the storm are topping 33- million
dollars.
At last report, Dominion Power
said about 29-thousand customers are
still without electricity.
Ernesto stormed through Virginia
Friday leaving behind flooding and wind
damage from Richmond to Virginia Beach.

GRAPHIC=Virgina Wine Ernesto could create a sour grape
harvest for some Virginia vineyards, by
ruining grapes and delaying production.

Wine producers had predicted a
good harvest this year.
Thanks to the dry weather this
summer, growers were anticipating a
sweeter, more robust flavored grape.
But heavy rains could change
that.
Too much moisture can cause the
grapes to swell and rupture.
According to the U-S Department
of Agriculture, Virginia grape
growers gathered 56-hundred tons of
commercial grapes in 2005.
That's up more than 50- percent
from the previous year.

And Police want to remind people
about the importance of obeying the law
in school zones.

Most of these signs will be
flashing tomorrow morning.
If drivers ignore the warning,
police say they WILL be there to hand
out tickets.
Officers recently monitored
neighborhoods used as shortcuts to main
roadways and found that most people
were driving about ten- miles above the
posted speed limit.
Beginning today a special traffic
enforcement detail will focus on
speeding, especially through
residential areas.

more effort into retaining their
students.
Schools like Virginia Tech,
William and Mary and James Madison have
introduced classes for freshmen that
cover topics from debt- to- drinking in
an effort to help students succeed.
At 84- precent, Virginia schools
already have a high return rate.
The national average is 70-
percent.
