It was just last year the school
system was embroiled in controversy,
after a survey revealed a number of
teachers and staff were intimidated by
former superintendent Linda Weber's
management style.

The issue came to a head at Cave
Spring High School after popular
Athletic Director Randy Meck was fired.

Meck initially said his dismissal
came after he complained athletic
fields were months behind schedule and
incomplete for the current season.

City that will observe a longer day.

While some parents worried how a
dismissal time of 3:40 would work with
afterschool activities, homework and
family time.....the biggest issue
seemed to be coordinating times.

Teachers at Crystal Spring were
told buses would be there by 3:40.

But on this first day of school at
four o'clock, teachers were still on

Looking ahead to the nine eleven
anniversary.. president Bush takes the

podium for a third time today to talk
about terrorism and national

security.

The focus: more than 400 terrorism
suspects.. held by the US at

Guantanamo Bay.

Mr. Bush will unveil proposed
legislation for trying these
detainees..

back in June the Supreme Court shot
down the administrations military

tribunal system ruling that it wasnt
authorized by Congress and would

violate international law.

With midterm elections looming large..
the president and Republican

party continue to see the war on terror
as their strong suit.

BUSH 13:21:04 We know what the
terrorists intend to do because they've

told us -- and we need to take their
words seriously.

Along with the Presidents speech
Tuesday the White House released a

booklet outlining a national strategy
for fighting terrorism.

Democrats dismissed it as P-R.. and
handed out their own report

cataloging what they consider the
presidents national security failures.

(Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV), Senate
Minority Leader)

REID 14:52:34 under the bush
administration and this republican
congress

America is less safe, facing greater
threats and unprepared for the

dangerous world in which we live.

Democrats are also not shying away from
challenging the administrations

handling of the Iraq war. They may push
for a vote of no confidence in

Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld as
early as today.

CLOSE: Today the administration also
plans to brief lawmakers on a

highly anticipated new army field
manual that sets guidelines for the

treatment of military detainees. Susan

While some parents worried how a

seemed to be coordinating times.

Teachers at Crystal Spring were
told buses would be there by 3:40, but

Looking ahead to the nine eleven
anniversary.. president Bush takes the

podium for a third time today to talk

about terrorism and national

security.

The focus: more than 400 terrorism
suspects.. held by the US at

Guantanamo Bay.

Mr. Bush will unveil proposed
legislation for trying these
detainees..

back in June the Supreme Court shot
down the administrations military

tribunal system ruling that it wasnt
authorized by Congress and would

violate international law.

With midterm elections looming large..
the president and Republican

party continue to see the war on terror
as their strong suit.

BUSH 13:21:04 We know what the
terrorists intend to do because they've

told us -- and we need to take their
words seriously.

Along with the Presidents speech
Tuesday the White House released a

booklet outlining a national strategy

for fighting terrorism.

Democrats dismissed it as P-R.. and
handed out their own report

cataloging what they consider the
presidents national security failures.

(Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV), Senate
Minority Leader)

REID 14:52:34 under the bush
administration and this republican
congress

America is less safe, facing greater
threats and unprepared for the

dangerous world in which we live.

Democrats are also not shying away from
challenging the administrations

handling of the Iraq war. They may push
for a vote of no confidence in

Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld as
early as today.

CLOSE: Today the administration also
plans to brief lawmakers on a

highly anticipated new army field
manual that sets guidelines for the

treatment of military detainees. Susan

ENG#1 The first of four Roanoke County

school meetings kicked off last night.
After some brief comments-
Superintendent Lorraine Lange turned it
over to parents who brought up several
issues- everything from growth in South
County, technology in the classrooms to
maintenance in the schools.

ENG#2 Roanoke City school students are

adjusting to a longer school day. The
biggest issue yesterday seemed to be
coordinating times. Teachers at Crystal
Spring were told the buses would be
there by the 3:40 dismissal time, but
at four o'clock teachers were still on
duty and students were lined up still
waiting to go home.

don't like to stay up until 11, it's a
new opportunity to get your late news
