GRAPHIC=HOLD After 115 years of being just for

women, Randolph-Macon Woman's College
voted today to start admitting men by

The decision was met with tears

ultimately face a challenge in court.

Steve Smallshaw has the story.

NOW?

Randolph Macon trustees said later
they 'could' hear the protests during
their meeting, but

it ultimately made no difference ...
and the announcement that everyone
expected but noone wanted to hear came
around 11:15 Saturday morning.

NATSOT natsot announcement 1:08:02

RUN06 THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES VOTED TO APPROVE
THE STRATEGIC DIRECTIONS ...

Tears and jeers immediately
followed, often drowning out the school
officials as they explained why the
decision to go co-ed was financially
necessary.

Hundreds of students and alumnae
had packed the are around Smith Hall,
voicing their displeasure through
shirts, signs and songs.

Some turned their backs, others
returned their class rings ... and at
least one employee quit on the spot.

NOTHING CAN REALLY PREPARE YOU FOR THAT

SORT OF FELT THEIR HEART BREAK, AND AS
MUCH AS YOU KNOW SOMETHING IS COMING,
UNTIL IT'S CONFIRMED, THAT'S SORT OF

for and expect a significant drop-off
in alumnae support.

And while the final vote was 25 to

2 in favor, it was not an easy decision
for anyone.
STANDUP Standup 12:38:51

IN Q=Randolph Macon Randolph Macon already has its first

male applicant, a young man from North
Carolina. School officials say if the
change survives a likely challenge,
they can expect 30 to 35 men on campus
here by next fall.

get.

have vowed to keep up the fight.

That's what one Indiana man did
...breaking records.

Jay Stokes goal was 600 jumps in
one day-- he made it all the way to 640
before the 24 hours expired.

It took 140 volunteers, four
pilots, and three planes to get the job
done.

Stokes averaged one jump every

two and a half minutes.

He broke the Guinness Book of
World Records, and lets not forget that
it was his 50th birthday.
