GRAPHIC=HOLD After 115 years of single-sex

The decision was met with tears and

Randolph Macon trustees said later
they 'could' hear the protests during

and the announcement that everyone
expected but noone wanted to hear came
around 11:15 Saturday morning.

RUN06 THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES VOTED TO APPROVE
THE STRATEGIC DIRECTIONS ...

Tears and jeers immediately
followed, often drowning out the school
officials as they explained why the
decision to go co-ed was financially
necessary.

Hundreds of students and alumnae
had packed the are around Smith Hall,
voicing their displeasure through
shirts, signs and songs.

Some turned their backs, others
returned their class rings ... and at
least one employee quit on the spot.

Last week's winner Kasey Kahne is
one out of the coveted transfer spot.
Kahne leads the series with 5 wins this
season. If he misses out on the Chase,
he would be the first driver since 1973
to win the most races and not finish in
the top 10.

As you can see, at the start...
it looks like your typical 5k race at
Greenhill Park in Roanoke.

But looks can be deceiving...

During the last leg of the race,
the runners crawl through the mud just
like Marines do for their training.

It's quite messy, but a very
popular event each year.

More than 15-hundred people
usually compete.
