that our nation changed forever, when
terrorists hijacked four commercial
jets.

Two airliners rammed into the World
Trade Center, and one hit the Pentagon.

The other plane was brought down by
heroic passengers in a Pennsylvania
field, before it could reach
Washington, D- C.

When bells toll across New York City at
8:46 this morning...it will mark
exactly five years since the World
Trade Center and our entire nation was
hit with a mighty blow. In the
aftermath, thousands of family's have
coped with unimaginable loses and
millions of Americans have faced a
sobering reality...that terrorists can
strike at any time, in any place.

September 11th observances began on

Sunday. At the Pentagon, 184 beams of
light illuminated the night sky each
one representing a life lost in the
attack there. In Shanksville,
Pennsylvania a memorial mass was
celebrated...and in New York city...the
President and Mrs. Bush participated in
several events. They laid wreaths at
ground zero...attended a prayer service
and visited a fire house.

Five years later, ground zero looks
more like a construction site than
anything else...but for many and
especially those here on that infamous
day...it will always be hallowed

Many relatives and friends of victims

fifth anniversary of 9-11, we wanted to
find out how people in our area will
mark the occassion.

VO-NAT A News-7 Survey USA poll of

area residents found 80 percent will
reflect back on the events of September
11, 2001.

But 39-percent of those polled

said they'll treat it as a normal day.

18 percent said they'll visit
a memorial or church.

And a quarter said they'll
spend the day with family and friends.

GRAPHIC=9-11 Governor Tim Kaine is marking the

anniversary with a statewide moment of
silence at the Capitol Square in
Richmond at 9:37 A-M, followed by the
ringing of the Square's bell.

That's one of many ways
Virginians are marking the somber
occasion.

In Roanoke last night, six
localities from around the region took
part in a ceremony remembering
Nine-eleven.

The American flag anchored by two
ladder trucks hung above the city
market area, as husbands, wives,
fathers ..sons.... police and
firefighters came from all over the
region.

The sounds of the Roanoke College
Children's Choir filled the air- while
most held hands, and reflected on a day
that no one will ever forget.

A big part of the ceremony
centered around law enforcement
officers who lined the streets, paying
tribute to their distant colleagues who
lost their lives five years ago.

sensors and a robot arm to check for
damage on the heat shield, but found
none.

Some small pieces of foam did break
off about four minutes after Saturday's
liftoff.

This morning Atlantis is delivering a
giant truss with two attached solar
wings to the station.

Over the next week, astronauts will
perform three spacewalks to get the
truss hooked up.

The College of William and Mary found
an ally after our story about the fight
over its athletic logo. Darlene Oliver
went to Shawsville high school and
wrote:

Our nickname was the Shawnees. This
name signified strength, fierceness and
boldness. So, what's offensive about
that? I fully support William and Mary
and their use of "The Tribe". The NCAA
should stick to athletic rules and
regulations and not involve themselves
in school administrative matters!

And the Department of Game and Inland
Fisheries' ban on deer feeding got a
viewer from Moneta fired up:

I guess next it will be illegal to feed
birds and squirrels in our yards since
they are "wild animals." I bet Virginia
Game wouldn't have a problem feeding
deer if they could sell a license to
allow us to do so. What's next for
Virginia? Will we have to purchase a
stamp to feed birds and squirrels in

our yards?

Astronauts spent yesterday using
sensors and a robot arm to check for
damage on the heat shield, but found
none.

Some small pieces of foam did break
off about four minutes after Saturday's
liftoff.

This morning Atlantis is delivering a
giant truss with two attached solar
wings to the station.

Over the next week, astronauts will
perform three spacewalks to get the
truss hooked up.

terrorists hijacked four commercial
jets.

Two airliners rammed into the World
Trade Center, and one hit the Pentagon.

The other plane was brought down by

When bells toll across New York City at
8:46 this morning...it will mark
exactly five years since the World
Trade Center and our entire nation was
hit with a mighty blow. In the
aftermath, thousands of family's have
coped with unimaginable loses and
millions of Americans have faced a
sobering reality...that terrorists can
strike at any time, in any place.

September 11th observances began on
Sunday. At the Pentagon, 184 beams of
light illuminated the night sky each
one representing a life lost in the
attack there. In Shanksville,
Pennsylvania a memorial mass was
celebrated...and in New York city...the
President and Mrs. Bush participated in
several events. They laid wreaths at
ground zero...attended a prayer service
and visited a fire house.

Five years later, ground zero looks
more like a construction site than
anything else...but for many and
especially those here on that infamous
day...it will always be hallowed

find out how people in our area will
mark the occassion.

area residents found 80 percent will
reflect back on the events of September
11, 2001.

But 39-percent of those polled
said they'll treat it as a normal day.

18 percent said they'll visit
a memorial or church.

anniversary with a statewide moment of
silence at the Capitol Square in
Richmond at 9:37 A-M, followed by the
ringing of the Square's bell.

That's one of the many ways
Virginians are marking the somber
occasion.

In Roanoke last night, six
localities from around the region took
part in a ceremony remembering
Nine-eleven.

ladder trucks hung above the city
market area, as husbands, wives,

centered around law enforcement
officers who lined the streets, paying
tribute to their distant colleagues who

It's a sea of American flags along
Franklin Road.

Each flag represents a victim of

Astronauts spent yesterday using
sensors and a robot arm to check for
damage on the heat shield, but found
none.

Some small pieces of foam did break
off about four minutes after Saturday's
liftoff.

This morning Atlantis is delivering a
giant truss with two attached solar

wings to the station.

Over the next week, astronauts will
perform three spacewalks to get the
truss hooked up.

reported missing at around eight
Saturday night.

Police say he was found at a
neighbor's house Sunday morning.

Jeramine was in good health and
was later reunited with his mother.

from all around the region gathered to
remember 9-11. A big part of the

ceremony centered around law
enforcement officers who lined the
streets, paying tribute to their
