died from bacterial meningitis.
Twenty-one-year-old Jennifer Leigh
Wells of Charlottesville died
on Sunday.
School officials say Wells was
rushed to the University of Virginia
Medical Center on Friday after
collapsing at her parents' home.
Health officials have contacted
those who had been in close contact
with Wells, and have given them
antibiotics.
Under state law, students are
vaccinated against bacterial
meningitis.
But the vaccine is not 100-percent
effective, because
there are five strains of the disease.

Hospital) a certain percentage of ear
infections are viral so no antibiotic
is necessary and in fact an antibiotic
in a viral infection isn't helpful at
all. SO A NEW STUDY IN THE JOURNAL OF
THE AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION
DECIDED TO SEE HOW CHILDREN FARED
WITHOUT ANTIBIOTICS. DOCTORS ASKED
PARENTS TO USE A WAIT AND SEE APPROACH.

prescription and told them to hold on
to it for 48 hours, and if the child's
getting worse fill the prescription. 38
percent of the people did fill the
prescription, 62 percent did not. IN
