(PKG)

Security is already tight in New York
City.. in anticipation of 90 world

leaders.. arriving for the annual UN
General assembly meeting.

President Bush gets into town today
with Iran, Iraq and the spread of
democracy topping his agenda. The
administration wants sanctions against
Iran for its failure to suspend nuclear
enrichment.. but Mr. Bush has ruled out
any discussion with the Iranian
president.. who ll also be at the UN.

While President Bush turns his
attention to global concerns.. a
showdown with fellow Republicans in
Washington appears to be defusing
itself.

The White House is expressing hope for
a compromise with G-O-P senators who
are unhappy with the administration s
proposal for trying and interrogating
terror suspects.

(Stephen Hadley, National Security
Adviser)

HADLEY 10:52:35 I think the way ahead
here is to all come together behind the
proposition that the president has

made, that we need this CIA program.
That's the first thing.

The president s national security
adviser said he wanted to see it done
without changing the Geneva
Conventions.. the critical issue for
dissenting senators.

(Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC))

GRAHAM 10:32:55 If it's seen that our
country is trying to redefine the
Geneva Convention to meet the needs of
the CIA, why can't every other country
redefine the Geneva Convention to meet
the needs of their secret police?

The full senate may take up the issue
this week.

CLOSE: President Bush.. who has spent
the last couple week s giving war on
terrorism speeches.. gets a large
international audience Tuesday when he
addresses the general assembly. Susan
Roberts, News 7.

(PKG)

Security is already tight in New York
City.. in anticipation of 90 world
leaders.. arriving for the annual UN
General assembly meeting.

President Bush gets into town today
with Iran, Iraq and the spread of
democracy topping his agenda. The

administration wants sanctions against
Iran for its failure to suspend nuclear
enrichment.. but Mr. Bush has ruled out
any discussion with the Iranian
president.. who ll also be at the UN.

While President Bush turns his
attention to global concerns.. a
showdown with fellow Republicans in
Washington appears to be defusing
itself.

The White House is expressing hope for
a compromise with G-O-P senators who
are unhappy with the administration s
proposal for trying and interrogating
terror suspects.

(Stephen Hadley, National Security
Adviser)

HADLEY 10:52:35 I think the way ahead
here is to all come together behind the
proposition that the president has
made, that we need this CIA program.
That's the first thing.

The president s national security
adviser said he wanted to see it done
without changing the Geneva

Conventions.. the critical issue for
dissenting senators.

(Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC))

GRAHAM 10:32:55 If it's seen that our
country is trying to redefine the
Geneva Convention to meet the needs of
the CIA, why can't every other country
redefine the Geneva Convention to meet
the needs of their secret police?

The full senate may take up the issue
this week.

CLOSE: President Bush.. who has spent
the last couple week s giving war on
terrorism speeches.. gets a large
international audience Tuesday when he
addresses the general assembly. Susan

Now here's a look at today's top local
stories.

We have some traffic information
to pass along this morning...

State Police say Route 58 in
Carroll County is closed about a mile
east of Hillsville because of a tractor
trailer accident. A detour is in
place at Route 669 or Springwillow
Road.

We now know what caused Saturday
night's carbon monoxide leak at the
Sigma Chi fraternity house on the
Roanoke College campus.

Fire officials tied the leak to a
clogged flue pipe in the boiler system.

No one was injured.
