An unprecedented gathering of 21 Muslim
diplomats, summoned to the summer papal
palace of Castelgandolfo. And following
two weeks of violent protest...

(applause after papal speech)

finally, a warm welcoming applause.

nat pop Pope speaking

It's Pope Benedict's latest effort to
defuse Muslim anger over a quote he
used in a speech saying that Islam was
a religion spread by the sword.

Without referring to the quote
directly, he began by expressing his
esteem and profound respect for Islam.

His 5 minute speech, made in French but
also translated into Arabic by the
Vatican, made repeated references to
the need for dialogue between the
religions.

Christians and Muslims must learn to
work together, he said, in order to
guard against all forms of intolerance
and to oppose all manifestations of
violence.

BRIDGE: THE MAIN THEME OF POPE
BENEDICT'S SPEECH - THAT COMMUNICATIONS
BETWEEN CHRISTIANS AND MUSLIMS SHOULDNT
BE CONSIDERED AN OPTIONAL EXTRA.

INSTEAD HE CALLED IT A VITAL NECESSITY
ON WHICH OUR COMMON FUTURE DEPENDS.

First reactions were positive. As he
left the meeting, Iraq' ambassador said
the Pope's speech should finally end
the anger over the pontiff's remarks,
and that it was time for Muslims to put

the past behind and build bridges with
Christianity.

Another Muslim representative praised
the Pope, saying his speech had been
"very good and warm."

The hope is that this will finally mark
an end to the fury, and the beginning
of a new peace between the faiths.

A WAY ROCK STARS ARE HELPING THIS
CITY'S DOWN AND OUT MUSICIANS...

"There are a lot of people focusing on
the rebuilding of the city, the bricks

and mortar. But we feel that music is
the spirit and the heart and soul of
the

city and that's what we're trying to
work on."

Saturday when Georgia Tech comes to
town.

The Hokies announced today
that defensive end Chris Ellis and
split end Josh Morgan have been
suspended for a violation of team

say what that violation was.

Morgan is Tech's
second-leading receiver and has blocked
two punts. Ellis has 12 tackles and a
sack so far this season.

said back in February at Daytona that

Yesterday, he took a major step in
that direction with his 18th career

TNT Chaser Kasey Kahne watched his day :00 turn sour early, tangling with Tony
Stewart at lap 11.

Kahne wound up finishing 38th.

The points leader coming in,
Kevin Harvick, isn't the leader anymore
after blowing up in the late stages of
the race.

He came home 32nd.

His teammate, Burton got the
lead from Matt Kenseth with 6 to go.

Kenseth ran out of gas with two
laps left, as Burton pulled away for
the victory.

It's his first checkered flag in 175
races spanning more than 5 years.

He also grabs the points lead.
