The Association of Zoos and Aquariums
has given Mill Mountain Zoo a year long
extension to fix a number of problems.

They include improving the zoo's
financial stability, addressing low

staff levels, as well as building a new
quarantine and health center.

To address these concerns, zoo
leaders say they need more money
especially from the city of Roanoke.

If these problems are not fixed

If that happens, the zoo won't close,

Founders College is the brainchild
of Doctor Gary Hull, a Duke University

for- profit liberal arts college.

He and his partners have a contract
on the former Merritt Hutchinson resort
property along Leesville Road.

But to make room for the college,
its faculty housing and a planned
retirement community, the county would
need to change its comprehensive plan.

He's already lost eleven during

A 2004 study found more than 23-

More than 36- percent were
