File Tape A statewide plan introduced by
Chatham Senator Charles Hawkins was
killed in a House committee yesterday.

The plan would have raised about
a billion dollars a year for road and
rail improvements.

That's the amount of money the
Senate and Governor Tim Kaine believe
is needed to fix the state's problems.

The House is firmly opposed to
tax increases.

But yesterday, a money committee
passed a package that would provide an
additional two- point- four BILLION
dollars for transportation over the
next six- years.

That plan includes debt which the
*Senate* is opposed to.

Last year, the organization
distributed 10-million pounds of food.

The goods go to nonprofit food
pantries, children's feeding programs,
shelters, soup kitchens, and elderly
care facilities.

There is a year-round need for
food, volunteers and donations - not
just during the holidays.

Starting in the fall of 2007, the
college will offer an on-line nursing
program.

The first year Virginia Western
will accept 10 students with the hopes
of expanding in the future.

While most of the course work can
be done on-line -- students will have
to do some lab and clinical work.

But the college says that can be
arranged on the weekends and evenings.
