The bill drew fire from Democrats
in both the Senate and the House.

The legislation prohibits blatant
abuses of detainees, but gives the
President flexibility to decide what
interrogation techniques are legally
permissible.

It passed the Senate Thursday
after an amendment that would have
given suspects the right to challenge
their detentions in court was narrowly
defeated.

MLB/MASN Talk about a late game. This one didn't
even start until close to midnight,
thanks to a four-and-ahalf hour rain
delay.

Some good defense early on. The
Phillies' Pat Burrell flies to deep
center, but Nook Logan makes a great
leaping catch to save a home run.

Bottom of the second -- Ryan Church
smacks a solo homer off Jon Lieber and
it's 1-nothing, Nats.

Philly ties it in the fifth when Ryan
Zimmerman misplays one at third, and
his error allows Abraham Nunez to cross
the plate.

But in the bottom of the sixth, Brian
Schneider's single to right scores two.
Washington wins three-one. The Phils
are now two behind the Dodgers in the
wild card chase with three games left.

Now let's check the scoreboards.

State lawmakers headed home last
night without agreeing on anything
substantial.

A Senate committee killed the
House funding plan which relied heavy
on debt.

That came after the House killed
the Senate's tax and fee plan earlier
in the week. Governor Tim Kaine
blames House leaders for the lack of
compromise and believes delegates will
pay for it during next years elections.

Majority leader Morgan Griffith
says Virginia's transportation problems
have been building for decades and
can't be solved in one year.

(END SOT)

With the clock running out before the
midterm election break.. the

Republican controlled Congress handed
president Bush a victory.

A bill establishing military
commissions to interrogate and try
terror

suspects is headed to the white house
for his signature.

(Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC))

GRAHAM 19:20:10 America can be proud
not only did she adhere to the

Geneva conventions she went further
than she had to because were better

than the terrorists

The legislation prohibits war crimes
and blatant abuses of detainees,

but gives the president flexibility to
decide what interrogation

techniques ARE permissible.

The White House had to compromise with
a group of maverick republicans

in order to get the bill through the
senate.. most democrats opposed the

legislation.. concerned it left the
door open for abuse.

(Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV))

REID 18:29:59 I personally believe this

legislation in unconstitutional.

It will certainly be struck down by the
Supreme Court in the years ahead

and when that happens will be back here
debating how to bring terrorists

to justice.

On the campaign trial Thursday..
president Bush was already spinning the

House vote on the measure against
democrats.

BUSH 15:52:50 We must give our
professionals the tools necessary to

protect the American people in this war
on terror,// and those in the

House of Representatives were wrong to
vote against this bill.

CLOSE: The legislation could allow the
President to begin prosecuting

detainees connected to 9/11 just as
voters head to the polls in

November. Susan Roberts, CBS News,
Washington.

MLB/MASN Talk about a late game. This one didn't
even start until close to midnight,
thanks to a four-and-ahalf hour rain
delay.

Some good defense early on. The
Phillies' Pat Burrell flies to deep

center, but Nook Logan makes a great
leaping catch to save a home run.

Bottom of the second -- Ryan Church
smacks a solo homer off Jon Lieber and
it's 1-nothing, Nats.

Philly ties it in the fifth when Ryan
Zimmerman misplays one at third, and
his error allows Abraham Nunez to cross
the plate.

But in the bottom of the sixth, Brian
Schneider's single to right scores two.
Washington wins three-one. The Phils
are now two behind the Dodgers in the
wild card chase with three games left.

Now let's check the scoreboards.
