asking the state police to investigate
how a man died in police custody over
the weekend.

Police say 46-year-old Clarence
Beard Junior resisted arrest and had to
be pepper-sprayed when they arrested
him Sunday morning.

happened that night, and there's been
increasing unrest in Lynchburg's
minority community over Beard's death.

A preliminary autopsy points to

L-P-D is conducting its own
internal investigation, but now the
city is asking the state police to look
into the matter as well.

(END SOT) An all-night....all-out manhunt...for a

suspected cop killer is over. Police in
central Florida say they've killed the
suspect accused of shooting 2
deputies.. One fatally.

"We don't know his name yet....but the
guy we shot in the woods is the guy
we've been looking for."

The massive search began near lakeland
Thursday just after the suspect was
pulled over for speeding. He fled into
the woods and was chased by

Deputy Vernon Williams and another
officer. Williams was killed by a burst
of gunfire while the other deputy was
shot in the leg.

Police quickly established a perimeter
around the woods and brought in about
1000 law enforcement personnel to
search the thick woods, shoulder to
shoulder. At one point, officers
literally walked on top of some brush
were the man was hiding. He was told to
surrender, but police say he didn't
follow their orders.

"The killer chose his end, he chose his
end because he didn't show both hands."

Police say the suspect was involved in

drug dealing and appeared to have
Deputy Williams firearm. They are still
working on his exact identity...but are
certain the man who gunned down one of
their own is no longer a threat to them
or the community.

school shooting.

Authorities say Duane Morrison
shot and killed 16-year-old Emily Keyes
on Wednesday before killing himself as
SWAT team members stormed a Colorado
high school.

GRAPHIC=FATAL ACCIDENT A man involved in a fatal car

accident in Rocky Mount has been
charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Police say 47- year- old Elio Luna
Lara was travelling south on Grassy
Hill Road around 4:40 yesterday
afternoon.

He apparently drove off the right
side of the road, overcorrected and
went into the northbound lane where his
car hit another head on.

A passenger in the second car, 84
year old Ina Wood, died a short time
later. The driver, Paul Wood, was
taken to the hospital where he
reportedly remains in serious
condition.

Police say Lara fled from the
scene of the accident, but turned
himself in a few hours later.

Jeffrey and Michael Derderian.

It means there will be no criminal
trial in a case where 100 people died

three years ago in warwick when the
Station Nightclub went up in

Flames.. a fire that spread rapidly by
foam installled by the brothers.

Michael Derderian will spend four
years in prison�Jeffrey Derderian

gets no jail time and 500 hours of
community service.

to prayers is planned.

The most prominent event of

thanks to a four-and-ahalf hour rain
delay.

Some good defense early on. The
Phillies' Pat Burrell flies to deep
center, but Nook Logan makes a great
leaping catch to save a home run.

Bottom of the second -- Ryan Church
smacks a solo homer off Jon Lieber and
it's 1-nothing, Nats.

Philly ties it in the fifth when Ryan
Zimmerman misplays one at third, and
his error allows Abraham Nunez to cross
the plate.

But in the bottom of the sixth, Brian
Schneider's single to right scores two.
Washington wins three-one. The Phillies
are now two behind the Dodgers in the
wild card chase with three games left.
