the stie.

Nearby residents however, have a

lockdown.

At 12:15 yesterday afternoon...
the Arnold R. Burton Technology Center
was locked down.

About 15 minutes later it was
lifted.

The principal would not say what

GRAPHIC=Tim Kaine Governor Tim Kaine is scheduled


to speak

in Roanoke today at a conference on
world trade.

The governor is expected to
discuss the importance of international
trade to Virginia and seek ideas for
the state's first international
strategic plan.

Kaine says that international
trade plays a fundamental role in
Virginia's economy... and that U-S
exports have increased by
three-hundred-twenty-one billion
dollars over the past decade.

Imports have increased by
nine-hundred-thirty billion dollars.

About 300 people have registered
to attend the two-day conference.

Senator George Allen will also be
in Roanoke at noon today at the
Southwest Virginia Higher Education
Center.

The visit is part of the
Senator's continuing tour across
Virginia.

more understandable chatter on police
scanners.

VO-NAT Kaine is urging all first


responders to use plain English instead
of codes that begin with the number
ten....

It's an effort to get rid of
miscommunication, especially in
emergency situations where time is of
the essence....perfect example, the
I-81 accident...several different
jurisdictions responded and not all of
them have the same ten codes....

Most fire departments have already
converted to common language.

But police departments argue ten codes
can be vital when dealing with an
officer's safety, or information you
don't want the suspect to hear, like a
hostage situation.

to a new High School stadium.

The Planning Commission voted 7

to zero last night to recommend
approval of a 3-thousand seat stadium
off Price's Fork Road.

The school board says Bill Brown
Stadium is falling apart and needs to
be replaced.

But placing the stadium near the
Stroubles Strew-bulls Mill community
has been controversial.

Several residents there are
concerned about traffic and noise.

But dozens turned out at last
night's meeting in favor of the site.

The Town Council will have the
final say on whether Blacksburg High
School gets a new stadium next Tuesday.
