injured after an apartment fire in
Roanoke County late this afternoon.

Firefighters responded to Unit-D
at the Cinnamon Ridge Complex on
Overland Drive.

When they arrived they found a
window blown out and an older woman and
her son inside.

Police transferred 71-year old
Esther Grier and her son Daniel to the
hospital.

Esther suffered severe burns over
her entire body and later died.

Daniel was treated for smoke

inhalation.

Fire officials say the fire
started in an upstairs bedroom.

What actually caused the fire is
still under investigation.

police shooting- could be facing
assault charges.

That's according to
Commonwealth's Attorney Don Caldwell.

22 year old Kenneth Michael
Lanham was shot in the thigh last night
around 11:30.

Police responded to a call
on Stratford Park Drive and found
Lanham. He told police he had a gun.

Lanham was shot when he
reportedly lunged at officers.

The chief says a preliminary
investigation shows the officers acted
accordingly and other issues were at
play.

It was found Lanham did *not*
have a weapon.

Officer Jennings and Officer Rice
are on paid- administrative leave
pending an investigation.

their kids at home today.

given, Culpeper County was forced to
close all of its schools.

Police spent the day searching for
anything that could be dangerous.

And in North Carolina, a student
there arrested for bringing a loaded
gun to school.

Police say other Thomasville
students saw the gun and reported it to
administrators.

The gun was found in the student's
backpack, he was arrested and charged.

The principal praised the students
for coming forward and was just
thankful the situation ended before any
trouble could begin.

That's what one lawmaker in Wisconsin
is proposing....

One state representatives believes
if teachers carried guns it would help
deter students from bringing them to

County Pennsylvania are mourning their
losses....as they lay to rest young
victims of the schoolhouse massacre.

buried--including two sisters who were
only 7 and 8 years old.

Dozens of buggies flooded the
streets for the funeral procession
where the grandfather of one of the
victims urged kids not to think evil of

tearing it down. Few can imagine asking
children to return to a one-room
building where such unspeakable terror

Lynchburg has ambitious plans, and
today the group announced a federal
grant that will help it expand.

The group, Lynchburg Grows, has
set up shop at the old Schenkel Farm,
a six and a half acre site near City
Stadium.

The greenhouses there once
supplied a large percentage of the cut
flowers sold in Virginia, and roses
that went untended for several years
have survived.

Today, Congressman Bob Goodlatte
announced a 300- thousand dollar grant
from the U.S Department of Agriculture.
