injured after an apartment fire in
Roanoke County yesterday afternoon.

Firefighters responded to Unit-D
at the Cinnamon Ridge Complex on
Overland Drive.

When they arrived they found a
window blown out and an older woman and
her son inside.

Police transferred 71-year old
Esther Grier and her son Daniel to the
hospital.

Esther suffered severe burns over
her entire body and later died.

Daniel was treated for smoke
inhalation.

Fire officials say the fire
started in an upstairs bedroom.

What actually caused the fire is

still under investigation.

police could be facing assault charges.

That's according to
Commonwealth's Attorney Don Caldwell.

22 year old Kenneth Michael
Lanham was shot in the thigh Wednesday
night around 11:30.

Police responded to a call
on Stratford Park Drive and found
Lanham.

He told police he had a gun and
was shot when he reportedly lunged at
officers.

The chief says a preliminary
investigation shows the officers acted
accordingly and other issues were at
play.

Plant are entering their first full day
of a strike.

About ten workers remained on the
picket line throughout the night.

At issue are proposed plant
closings and cuts in retiree benefits.

The current contract expired in
July but the union agreed with Goodyear
to keep negotiating.

This week the union notified
the company it planned to strike if an
agreement wasn't reached.

Around one o'clock yesterday
afternoon workers in Danville and 11
other plants nationwide walked off the
job.

Tom Martin and his group of
students are weaving computers and
wires into fabrics.

Right now, they're using this
industrial loom to make a rug filled
with sensors.

They say the rug could be used to
sense a crowded room, and help direct
traffic to another exit.

Researchers say the technology is
about five years away from going

non-specific bomb threat caused police
to close all the county's schools.

One of 68 stores the chain is
opening this Fall, and the Lynchburg
location won favorable reviews from the
opening day crowd.
