the evacuation of more than 16-thousand
people in Apex, North Carolina last
night.

rocked the E- Q Industrial Services
plant around 10 P-M.

A chlorine cloud rose 50- feet in the
air after the fire broke out.

This truck driver was sleeping across
the street from the plant when he got a
rude awakening.

injured after an apartment fire in
Roanoke County.

Firefighters responded to Unit-D
at the Cinnamon Ridge Complex on
Overland Drive yesterday afternoon.

When they arrived they found a
window blown out and an older woman and
her son inside.

Police transferred 71-year old
Esther Grier and her son Daniel to the
hospital.

Esther suffered severe burns over
her entire body and later died.

Daniel was treated for smoke
inhalation.

Fire officials say the fire
started in an upstairs bedroom.

What actually caused the fire is
still under investigation.

Plant is entering its first full day.

picket line throughout the night.

At issue are proposed plant
closings and cuts in retiree benefits.

The current contract expired in
July but the union agreed with Goodyear
to keep negotiating.

This week the union notified

Around one yesterday afternoon
workers in Danville and 11 other plants
nationwide walked off the job.

Lynchburg has ambitious plans, and
yesterday the group announced a federal
grant that will help it expand.

The group, Lynchburg Grows, has
set up shop at the old Schenkel Farm,

a six and a half acre site near City
Stadium.

The greenhouses there once
supplied a large percentage of the cut
flowers sold in Virginia, and roses
that went untended for several years
have survived.

Yesterday, Congressman Bob
Goodlatte announced a 300- thousand
dollar grant from the U.S Department of
Agriculture.

about an apartment fire in Roanoke
County

News 7 has learned that 71 year
old Esther Grier, who was taken to the
hospital, later died from severe burns
all over her body.

Her son Daniel, who was also
inside the apartment, was treated for
smoke inahlation.

The fire broke out late yesterday
afternoon at Cinnamon Ridge Complex on
Overland Drive.

Fire crews say the woman was fixing
Christmas presents when the fire
started.

The cause is still under
investigation but the fire marshall has
determined the fire originated in the
upstairs back bedroom.

from a hazardous material fire in North
Carolina that forced more than 16-
thousand people from their homes in
the middle of the night.

Officials say 20 to 30 explosions
rocked the E- Q Industrial Services
plant around 10 P-M.

A chlorine cloud rose 50- feet in the
air after the fire broke out.

This truck driver was sleeping across
the street from the plant when he got a
rude awakening.

police shooting- could be facing
assault charges.

That's according to

Commonwealth's Attorney Don Caldwell.

22 year old Kenneth Michael
Lanham was shot in the thigh Wednesday
night around 11:30.

Police responded to a call
on Stratford Park Drive and found
Lanham. He told police he had a gun.

Lanham was shot when he
reportedly lunged at officers.

The chief says a preliminary
investigation shows the officers acted
accordingly and other issues were at
play.

It was found Lanham did *not*
have a weapon.

Officer Jennings and Officer Rice
are on paid- administrative leave
pending an investigation.

Here's a look at today's top
stories.

Sweet Briar College says, so far,
there are no other cases of meningitis
after a student was diagnosed with the
illness on Tuesday.

She's being treated at the UVA
Medical Center, and the college says
her condition has improved.

Meanwhile, there's a possible
case of the mumps on the Virginia Tech
campus.

The health center says the
student's diagnosis won't be confirmed
for at least a week.

Full- time students are already
required to be immunized for the mumps
before starting school.

Roanoke's Commonwealth's attorney
says a man shot in a police-involved
shooting could face assault charges.

Kenneth Michael Lanham was shot in
the thigh Wednesday night after he told

police he had a gun, and reportedly

spinach outbreak is to blame for the
death of a toddler last month.

nationwide.

Amish schoolhouse shooting will be laid
to rest today.

Yesterday, dozens of horse- drawn
buggies carried mourners to a simple
hilltop ceremony for four of the girls.

Two of the victims were sisters-- ages
seven and eight.

Roads leading to the burial site
were closed to allow the Amish to
grieve in private.

Meanwhile, there's word that a child
wounded in the shooting is still in
grave condition.

Officials say doctors may take the
girl off life support.

71 year old Esther Grier was taken
to the hospital and later died from
severe burns all over her body.
