Last night, 17- thousand residents
of Apex-- just southwest of Raleigh--

were evacuated because of toxic fumes
from a chemical fire.

The fire ignited yesterday afternoon
at this hazardous waste plant, creating
a cloud of chlorine gas.

At the height of the fire, chemicals
could be smelled two miles away.
And as firefighters work to get the
upper hand, the Homeland Security
Department is also keeping a close eye
on the blaze.

Alison Harmelin has the latest.

(The flames shot 150 feet into the
air....but it was the toxic fumes

from a burning industrial fire that
concerned authorities the most...so

much that they asked 17,000 people to
evacuate from a Raleigh, North

Carolina suburb.

firefighters, I heard loud noises."



Officials say a dangerous plume of
chlorine smoke drifted from the blaze


overnight, but rain this morning has
been a big help.

"Hopefully that plume that we've been
worried about moving around and

possibly exposing other neighborhoods,
may not be an issue any longer as

long as the rain is here."



At least 18 people have been treated at
local emergency rooms, most for

respiratory problems. The fire broke
out Thursday afternoon at the

facility that stores hazardous
materials. At one point, fire
officials

say the blaze jumped to another plant
and ignited petroleum tanks

causing numerous explosions.

in to assess the situation that

officials say is improving.

significantly as a result of having

burned up all the combustible

And while the plant has been cited for
safety infractions in the

past....officials say in its most
recent inspection, just last week, no

violations were found.

Authorities say the huge fire
started just before four this morning
in the basement of the First United
Methodist Church.

Flying embers from the blaze then
spread the fire to three other downtown
buildings-- including a 22- story
structure that was being renovated.

Firefighters responded to Unit-D
at the Cinnamon Ridge Complex on

Overland Drive yesterday afternoon.

When they arrived they found a
window blown out and an older woman and
her son inside.

Police transferred 71-year old
Esther Grier and her son Daniel to the
hospital.

Esther suffered severe burns over
her entire body and later died.

Daniel was treated for smoke
inhalation.

Fire officials say the fire
started in an upstairs bedroom.

What actually caused the fire is
still under investigation.

At issue are proposed plant

July but the union agreed with Goodyear

This week the union notified
