President Bush: "Once again North Korea

The response is centered at the United

DREW LEVINSON/United Nations:

The Security Council is considering

for North Korea to import or export

The U-S is also proposing financial

tainted spinach was also grown.

The company says it ordered a recall
after finding e-coli in the irrigation

the lettuce has caused any illnesses.

Health officials also say its
unlikely the source of e-coli in the

(END SOT) THERE ARE SEVERAL WAYS E-COLI CAN GET

INTO FOOD.

IT USUALLY STARTS IN ANIMALS.....
ESPECIALLY CATTLE.

THE BACTERIA CAN BE SPREAD THROUGH MEAT
OR MEAT HANDLERS.

E-COLI CAN ALSO BE FOUND IN THE MANURE
OF INFECTED ANIMALS.

IF USED AS FERTILIZER..... FRUITS AND
VEGETABLES CAN BECOME CONTAMINATED.

(SOT-Dr. Philip Tierno/NYU Medical

"the e-coli contains a toxin called a
shig a toxin, which is a very

wicked toxin."

THAT WICKED TOXIN CAN CAUSE NASEAU AND
SERIOUS GASTROINTESTINAL PROBLEMS.

(Video From: Cleveland Clinic)

THOSE WHO GET IT USUALLY NEED MEDICAL

ASSISTANCE.

(SOT-Dr. David Bronson/Cleveland

"this typically is not a minor, lower

(STANDUP: Dr. Sean Kenniff/CBS

OVERALL, THE CHANCE OF GETTING E-COLI
IS PRETTY SMALL.

BUT IF SOMEONE DOES EAT FOOD
CONTAMINATED WITH THE BACTERIA.... IT

TAKES AROUND ONE TO EIGHT DAYS FOR
SYMPTOMS TO SET IN.

(nats)

THE POTENTIALLY DEADLY BACTERIA SOUNDS
SCARY.

(SOT-Dr. Philip Tierno/NYU Medical

"you shouldn't be scared, but you
should be aware, understanding how to

deal with it and prevent it."

ONE WAY TO PREVENT IT IS COOK FOOD

THROUGHLY.... THAT CAN KILL E-COLI.

FOR RAW FOODS THE BEST MEASURE IS TO
WASH THEM... EVEN IF THEY'RE

PACKAGED.

(SOT-Dr. David Bronson/Cleveland

Clinic)

"Your food preperation surfaces need to
be cleaned as well, and you

ought to do that with a disenfectant,
uh at the end of every time you

end up cooking , it can be transmitted
from a counter to other food."

AND IF THE PRODUCT YOU HAVE IS PART OF
A RECALL... THERE'S ONLY ONE

SOLUTION.... THROW IT OUT.

GRAPHIC= An update now to that

Botetourt County school bus story
earlier in the newscast. State police
confirm 6 students were taken to
Alleghany Regional Hospital.

However, they say there was
never any accident. The driver
apparently slammed on the brakes to
avoid a deer. That's when several
children began complaining of injuries.
We'll have more coming up on News-7 at
Six.
