recently, you may be surprised to hear
many schools in our area don't have
security cameras.

Roanoke County is one of them but
that will soon change.

Natasha, school policy currently
doesn't allow the use of cameras in the
county schools.

future. As a result, some schools are
already getting ready.

them. As a part of a pilot program,
the school received 20 survelliance

cameras at the beginning of the school
year.

Until the school board changes its
policy, administrators can only watch
and wait but once they get the ok the
principal believes these new set of
eyes will be invaluable.

tonight whether or not to build a new
high school sports stadium.

Brown Stadium, but that facility hasn't

been renovated in years and is falling
apart.

The Montgomery County school
board wants to build a 3-thousand seat
stadium on 86 acres off Price's Fork
Road.

It would sit near the Stroubles
Mill community and many folks there are
concerned about traffic, lighting and
noise.

The town council is holding a
public hearing right now.

Hundreds of people are at the
meeting.

thousand members to vote for Webb for
U-S Senate.


The group is also giving him
five- thousand dollars.

Webb is opposed to using public
funds for private school voucher- plans

Webb also supports fully funding
No Child Left Behind, a program he

heading down.

With a normal winter, Roanoke Gas
says bills could fall by fifteen
percent or more, enough to save an
average customer more than 200 dollars
a year.

with heating oil prices and electricity
rates expected to rise.

The Commonwealth Transportation
Board is expected to take up the

roads.


And yet: those same citizens are
opposed to most plans to *pay* for new-
and- improved highways.

shows not much has changed since we
asked the question in February.

Fifty-two percent of those polled
now say it's "VERY important" for the
state to spend more money on highway
construction... that's a slight
increase from last Winter.

While a majority still support
increasing traffic fines to pay for
road work, that level of support has
fallen off since February.

Opposition to increasing the
vehicle sales tax- -as a means of
funding highway construction- -has only
increased over the last eight months.

Pittsylvania County left one man dead
and another hospitalized.

It happened around 4:30 on Route 40
in the Sandy Level area of the county.

State police say a Jeep Cherokee
was speeding when it ran off the road
and into a ditch, flipping over and
throwing the driver and passenger out.

18-year-old Christopher Adam Dunton
was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, Jonathan Walden, was
flown to Roanoke Memorial Hospital,
where he's in fair condition.

inches from a Salem home this
afternoon.

It happened near the
intersection of Harriet Ann Drive and

A car collided with a van and

The woman in her late 70's

apparently hit the accelerator instead

Her Ford Taurus crashed through a
block wall and into her pool.

Neighbors and police were able to
rescue the woman from her
fully-submerged car.

Magazine has published such a list.

The names of 53 women who'd had
abortions were published in 1972... the
same year the Supreme Court legalized
abortion with Roe versus Wade.


The magazine says 7,000 so far
have signed this petition, which will
