(END SOT) One day after North Korea claimed to
have tested a nuclear weapon, the
U.S. is in no mood to conduct direct
talks with the communist nation and
is not fazed by reports North Korea
could fire a nuclear tipped missile.
Sot: John Bolton/U.S. Ambassador to the
U.N.
"North Korea has had a successful
history of intimidating other
countries/edit/but they're not going to
be successful with us this time."
Bolton is back at the U.N. Security
Council today pushing tough
sanctions designed to cut off resources
needed for North Koreas nuclear
program and its ability to sell
ballistic missile technology.
Wendy Gillette/United Nations
"Those sanctions will not be imposed
unless North Koreas long-time ally
China agrees to them. As a permanent
member of the U.N.Security
Council, China has veto power over any
resolutions."
China says the nuclear test has had a
negative impact on it relations
with North Korea, and is now indicating
it will support some UN response.
sot: Wang Guangya /Chinese Ambassador
to UN
"will support some punitive actions..
but they have to be appropriate"
Japan is another nearby nation
watching this situation very closely.
Since yesterday, military planes have
been monitoring radiation levels
in the air. The Japanese are
considering imposing economic sanctions
of
their own, but say they have no
intention of building a nuclear
arsenal.
Meanwhile questions remain over whether
or not north korea did in fact
pull off a nuclear test..
something the white house says
..there's the possibility the world may
never be able to fully determine.
