Roanoke firefighters were called
to the S-B-A Caribbean Market on the
38-hundred block of Shenandoah Avenue
at around 7:30.

When they arrived... they found
the building full of smoke. Parts of
Shenandoah Avenue had to be closed, as
fire crews worked the scene.

It's believed an electric furnace

Investigators swarmed the private jet
carrying A-Rod where it came to a

stop at the end of a California runway.

The five passengers and two crew

Vegas .. when the pilot overshot the
runway.

20:05:04 (Super: Victor Gill, Burbank
Airport Spokesman)

"used up all of the avialable space of
the standard pavement and ran

over onto a special emergency pavement
we installed at the end of that

runway designed to collapse under the
weight of a fast moving aircraft."

(Karen Brown standup)

"the special barrier you see behind me
is made is made of concrete full

of air bubbles. a plane going through
it would sink and stop. it has the

same effect as riding your bicycle into
sand."

The system was installed after a
Southwest plane did the same thing ..

back in 2000. Without the break-away
cushion .. that aircraft crashed

through a concrete barrier and 43
passengers were injured.

This time the Yankee third baseman and
everyone on board walked away

uninjured.

Earlier this week, his teammate Cory
Lidle was not so lucky.

Lidle and his flight instructor were
flying low .. up the narrow

corridor of New York's East River.

Trying to make a hair-pin turn, they
ended up crashing into a highrise

building.

They had been flying under what are
called visual flight rules ..

meaning they weren't talking to a
tower.

(Mary Schiavo, Former Dept. of
Transportation Inspector General)

07:10:28 "you have to stay at 1,100
feet in that corridor and that's low

and very congeseted. it does pose a
safety risk and a security risk."

That's why the FAA just announced it is
banning fixed-wing planes from

flying low over the East River unless
the pilots are in contact with air

traffic control.
