GRAPHIC=Accident Authorities say one of three
vehicles involved in a collision
smashed into a home in Radford Saturday
afternoon.
It happened at the intersection
of Indian Valley and Childress Roads
just before 5.
A child was inside the home at the
time.
Two people were taken to Carilion
New River Valley Medical Center and a
third was airlifted to Roanoke.
Names have not been released and
medical conditions are unlcear, but
earlier officials said most of the
injuries did not appear to be
life-threatening.
The cause of the accident is still
under investigation.
No charges have been filed.

Bennett has died.
She raised the issue of of D-N-A
testing to determine whether Thomas
Jefferson fathered children by his
slave.
Bennett died in Arlington.
Her idea of D-N-A testing
led a team of scientists to begin a
genetic study of Jefferson and Sally
Hemings' descendants.
Their published findings
indicated that a male in the Jefferson
family, most likely Thomas, fathered at
least one of Hemings' children.
The article received worldwide
attention, and raised questions about
Jefferson's position on slavery.
Winifred Bennett was 71.

A Roanoke woman applied to a help
wanted ad in a local newspaper.
A few days later, she received a
letter saying she was selected to be a
secret shopper and a check in the mail
came for nearly three-thousand dollars.
Problem was... that her first
assignment was to wire transfer
25-hundred dollars of that money back
to the company.
Upon depositing the check, she
could keep the rest of the money for
her training.

go before election day, and another
poll shows a very close Senate race
between Republican Senator George Allen
and Democrat Jim Webb.
Yesterday's Washington Post poll
showed 49 percent support Allen, while
forty-seven percent support Webb.
That's within the poll's margin
of error of plus or minus three
percentage points.
It's the third poll in about two
weeks to show the race within the
margin or tied.

civil rights movement.
The exhibit features oral histories
and photographs of residents who
experienced the civil rights struggle
firsthand...culminating on June 10th,
1963.

Hall, sit-ins at a local restaurant and
marches through the streets of
Danville, as demonstrators fought to
end the Jim Crow system of segregation.

a helping hand yesterday as The 8th
Annual Ride 'Round the Valley kicked
off in Salem.

charity...it was a ride in remembrance.
It was one year ago, that Cline
Conner lost his life, shortly after
riding in the charity event.
Hundreds of people...young and
old turned out to remember Conner and
support the store.

ceremony was held in his honor.

Virginia has declined 27-percent since
1992-- and a new study says goverment
is not to blame.
A legislative research group finds
the main reasons are global competition
and labor costs.
The study ruled out government
regulators as a significant factor.

study's findings are consistent with
the trade group's own research.

Virginians are overweight.

states whose residents have the
fastest-growing bellies.
The recommendations to decrease
those increasing waistlines?
Higher taxes for high-fat buffets
and unhealthy fast food.
Also, mandatory gym classes and tax
incentives for healthy workers.
It's the latest phase of the
state's CHAMPION obesity initiative,
compiling suggestions from 800
community members who gathered at
regional forums.

minor injuries after an earthquake
jolted Hawaiians out of bed yesterday
morning.
One Roanoke resident witnessed the
earthquake firsthand, a little too
